
Provides expert-level legal representation as a court-appointed attorney for defendants charged with criminal offenses. Represents indigent clients in the most complex, high-profile, and difficult criminal defense cases. Serves in a senior and lead capacity, providing substantial guidance, mentorship, and technical expertise to other attorneys. Exercises independent judgment with minimal supervision and assists management in overseeing legal operations, case strategy, and attorney development within the Public Defender’s Office. Represents indigent clients in the most complex, serious, and/or high-exposure criminal cases at all stages of litigation, including jury trials and post-trial proceedings.
Responsibilities
Serves as lead counsel on complex, controversial, or precedent-setting cases.
Provides ongoing technical expertise, mentorship, and work direction to Public Defender III and other assigned attorneys.
Reviews and advises on case strategies, legal research, pleadings, motions, and trial preparation conducted by subordinate attorneys.
Works closely with social workers, investigators, prosecutors, and court personnel to resolve clients’ criminal matters.
Negotiates complex settlements and plea agreements on behalf of assigned clients.
Conducts advanced legal research and analysis of novel or complex legal issues.
Oversees preparation and filing of pretrial motions, appellate issues, and other critical pleadings.
Investigates alleged law violations and reviews investigative reports for accuracy and legal sufficiency.
Guides trial preparation, including witness strategy, evidentiary issues, and courtroom presentation.
May assist management in developing policies, procedures, and best practices for the office.
Performs related work as assigned.
Qualifications
Juris Doctorate (JD) degree.
Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas and be a member in good standing of the State Bar of Texas.
Extensive courtroom experience with strong emphasis on criminal defense, including jury trials.
Demonstrated experience handling complex felony cases and serving in a leadership or supervisory role.
Expert knowledge of criminal law, court procedures, and rules of evidence.
Ability to analyze and resolve highly complex legal issues and factual scenarios.
Ability to lead, mentor, and provide technical guidance to other attorneys.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound professional judgment.
Ability to conduct hearings and jury trials; prepare complex motions, briefs, and legal opinions.
Strong research, writing, negotiation, and courtroom advocacy skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with clients, staff, judges, prosecutors, and community partners.
Bilingual (Spanish and English) with ability to converse fluently in both languages.
Certificates, Licenses and Registration
Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas is required.
Must possess a current, valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license.
Must be able to be insured by the County’s insurance carrier.
