Substation Designer - Physical
Westwood Professional Services, Inc. seeks a collaborative, detail-oriented Substation Designer - Physical (CAD Technician) to join our team in Raleigh or Charlotte, NC or Madison, WI offices. The Substation Designer will prepare civil and physical electrical drawings for high voltage utility substation projects and renewable energy interconnections, working with engineers and consultants.
Responsibilities
Create and draft all engineering products and deliverables using CAD software for substation projects.
Collaborate with engineers and other drafters to identify and correct discrepancies.
Produce various types of drawings: general arrangements, plan and elevation views, grounding plans, foundation plans, cable trough/conduit plans, foundation layout plans, steel structure fabrication drawings (preferred), concrete foundation detail drawings (preferred), oil containment detail drawings (preferred), metal grate platforms detail drawings (preferred), fire wall detail drawings (preferred).
Import tables and calculations (e.g., BOMs) and create notes for each drawing.
Review and verify all work for accuracy before submission to supervisor or reviewer.
Understand and meet project schedules and quality requirements.
Complete drawings accurately and efficiently, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
Maintain high detail and quality in all substation design work.
Manage multiple substation projects simultaneously, adapting to changes.
Assist in overall delivery of substation projects, including communications, meetings, and project documents.
Provide interdepartmental support as required.
Coordinate designer efforts to develop required deliverables on multiple projects concurrently.
Coordinate with other external and internal project team members and identify when coordination with transmission line engineers, distribution line engineers, civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, and surveyors is needed.
Act as QA/QC lead for drafting reviews.
Support assigned PM in project management activities such as proposal development, resource allocation, and schedule adherence.
Mentor and train team members.
Lead by example and be accountable for own actions.
Follow department processes and procedures to support consistency.
Maintain a customer-focused attitude that Westwood is known for.
Serve as a specialist for physical design and provide consultation to colleagues and other project teams.
Provide clear and honest feedback to project team, external stakeholders, and clients.
Help develop approaches to accommodate client unique requests.
Advise management on maximizing return on investment.
Requirements
Minimum of 3 years CAD experience, preferably AutoCAD.
Familiarity with transmission and distribution projects in addition to substation projects.
