The Preconstruction
Sheet Metal Estimator
plays a key role in preparing accurate, competitive estimates for commercial sheet metal and HVAC ductwork projects. This position involves detailed analysis of plans and specifications, quantity takeoffs, pricing, vendor coordination, and bid preparation to support successful project pursuits and profitable outcomes. Duties & Responsibilities
Prepare detailed, accurate cost estimates for sheet metal/HVAC projects, including ductwork systems, air distribution, custom fabrications, insulation, and related components. Thoroughly review and interpret contract documents, including plans, specifications, addenda, and scope clarifications. Perform precise quantity takeoffs, organize data, and compile pricing information using industry-standard methods and tools. Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, subcontractors, and manufacturers; solicit and clarify pricing, lead times, and availability for sheet metal materials and equipment. Assist in the preparation and assembly of complete bid proposals, including scope narratives, exclusions, clarifications, and supporting documentation for submittal. Maintain organized, complete, and accurate project estimating records, files, and historical data for future reference and continuous improvement. Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and field teams on estimate reviews, value engineering opportunities, and post-bid clarifications. Support special projects related to estimating, pre-construction, or project management as assigned. Perform other related duties as required to support company goals. Qualifications
5+ years of progressive experience in commercial sheet metal estimating, HVAC ductwork estimating, or related mechanical construction estimating roles. Excellent working knowledge of commercial estimating software (e.g., Trimble Accubid, QuickPen, or similar PMC/Modigent-standard tools; specific platform training provided as needed). Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) for data analysis, reporting, and communication. Strong understanding of construction practices, methods, materials, and sequencing specific to sheet metal/HVAC systems (e.g., SMACNA standards, duct fabrication, air balancing considerations). Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with clients, vendors, and internal teams. Detail-oriented with strong analytical, mathematical, and organizational abilities. Professional demeanor, excellent computer skills, and a collaborative, team-oriented approach. Preferred Skills & Attributes
Familiarity with design-build processes, value engineering, and sustainable/green building practices. Experience estimating projects in commercial, industrial, healthcare, education, or municipal sectors. Knowledge of relevant codes and standards (e.g., SMACNA, ASHRAE, IMC).
