THE OPPORTUNITY

Who you will work with

The Director, U.S. Jewish Grantmaking works across our U.S. Jewish Grantmaking Team. This Director works under the supervision of the Senior Director, U.S. Jewish and closely with the Co-President.

Where and how you will work

Schusterman employees work a weekly hybrid schedule with a mix of in-office time and work-from-home flexibility. For this role, there is a preference to be in Greater Washington, DC, with consideration for Greater New York, NY. The U.S. Jewish Grantmaking Team also comes together in-person at the Washington, D.C. office as well as field-wide convenings and events monthly, so the ability to travel to these is required. This is a full‑time position. Please note that Schusterman does not cover relocation expenses for this position.

WHAT YOU WILL DO (RESPONSIBILITIES)

The Director, U.S. Jewish Grantmaking at Schusterman Family Philanthropies will oversee a strategic portfolio of grants, partnerships, and initiatives aimed at strengthening and advancing the U.S. Jewish community. This role involves leading teams, developing and executing strategies, engaging with key stakeholders—including nonprofit leaders, philanthropists, community organizations, and thought leaders—and ensuring alignment with Schusterman’s strategy and priorities. The Director will serve as a thought leader and advisor, leveraging research, policy analysis, and coalition building to drive impact.

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee and manage a portfolio of grants focused on strengthening the U.S. Jewish community and Israel, ensuring strategic alignment with Schusterman’s organizational values and priorities.
  • Develop and execute strategies to advance initiatives that foster a deep connection with the Jewish people and Israel.
  • Manage, mentor, and support team members, fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and high‑performing work environment. Provide guidance, professional development, and performance feedback to ensure team success.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including nonprofit leaders, philanthropists, educators, and community partners.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor on U.S. Jewish and Israel affairs, providing strategic insights, updates, and recommendations to Schusterman's senior leadership.
  • Coordinate closely with other Schusterman teams to ensure strategic and grantee alignment around advancing the U.S. Jewish community.
  • Cultivate stronger relationships between grantees to ensure a more coordinated, cohesive, and effective approach to our work.
  • Identify and cultivate new funding opportunities and partnerships to expand the impact of Schusterman’s work in this arena.
  • Represent the organization in high‑level meetings, conferences, and public fora related to U.S. Jewish life and philanthropy and help coordinate and prepare for related CLSFP leadership meetings.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and report on grant performance, ensuring accountability and measurable impact.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • 15+ years of relevant work experience in nonprofit, philanthropic, community, or educational organizations.
  • Deep understanding of the U.S. Jewish community and Israel, including its diversity, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Experience in grantmaking, philanthropy, or nonprofit management, with a track record of overseeing and evaluating strategic initiatives.
  • Strong relationship‑building and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience working with nonprofit leaders, philanthropists, and community partners.
  • Strategic thinking and problem‑solving abilities, with the capacity to develop and execute impactful initiatives in a complex and evolving space.
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills, with the ability to represent the organization in high‑level meetings, conferences, and media engagements.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities, demonstrating strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Comfort and agility navigating political and advocacy environments, particularly related to Israel.

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • An advanced degree.
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills and an ability to learn financial modeling and operational analysis.
  • Ability to thrive in a small collaborative setting, where teamwork, passion, positivity, and resourcefulness are highly valued.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS OF WORKING AT SCHUSTERMAN

This role features a competitive hiring range of $170,000-$215,000 based on experience and Schusterman’s commitment to internal equity. We offer a strong benefits package to support employee health and well‑being, including medical, dental, vision, retirement and mental health support.
