We support not only women in our culturally diverse community, but also women across the state who may need additional attention due to a high‑risk pregnancy or fetal diagnosis. With our partnership with the University of MN, the Birthplace supports the development of student nurses and residents through onsite observation and training, and helps improve evidence‑based practice and ongoing professional learning.
Newborn Family Care Center – Postpartum
24 beds Mom/Baby private rooms
Couplet care, average of 3 and 4 couplets in day/evening and night shifts
Care delivery team: RN and NST/NA
Professional growth encouraged in professional certifications and/or IBCLC
Inpatient lactation consultant on unit
Newborn IV antibiotic administration
This position will be working 64 hours every two weeks on the night shift, 8‑hour shifts and every other weekend.
Responsibilities
Assess patient needs and identify expected nursing outcomes
Involve patient, family and other health team members in gathering data
Use an ongoing, systematic process to gather relevant information from patient and family
Analyze data and information to identify potential risks, prioritize needs and determine priority problems
Identify outcomes that are age appropriate, culturally appropriate, realistic and attainable
Validate outcomes with patient, family and other health team members
Document data and identified outcomes
Implement nursing interventions based on the plan of care
Provide care according to the plan and in accordance with all relevant policies, procedures and nursing practice guidelines
Coordinate nursing care with the care of all other health team members
Initiate age and culturally appropriate measures to support and meet patient needs while achieving expected outcomes
Initiate patient/family teaching as appropriate to age, readiness to learn and available resources
Collaborate, consult or make referrals if unable to perform safely and independently
Delegate direct and indirect patient care activities to appropriate personnel based on needs, condition, potential for risk/harm, complexity of the skill and predictability of the outcome
Ensure all actions are based on scientific, ethical or ecological principles; proven effectiveness; past experience; practice standards; patient/family requests and values; or legal parameters
Use the full range of therapeutic modalities to support and augment the healing process, moving from least intensive and invasive to more, depending on need and context
Document interventions according to practice guidelines
Anticipate, recognize and respond to emergent situations
Required Qualifications
MN Registered Nurse (RN) license
Basic Life Support (American Heart Association or Red Cross)
Current NRP certification required within 6 months of hire
2 years of nursing OB/Medical surgical/Pediatric nursing experience
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or BAN
3 years of OB/Medical surgical experience
