Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Research Finance and Compliance, this position plays a critical role in executing institutional grant strategy, ensuring financial integrity, and maintaining compliance across all sponsored programs.

The Associate Director supports both pre-award and post-award functions, oversees grant financial operations, supports compliance activities, and assists with system optimization and workflow design across the Innovation Grants Hub. This role serves as a key liaison between research faculty, finance, compliance, and central administration to ensure consistent application of policies, accurate financial reporting, and successful grant execution.**Position Summary:**The Assistant Director of Finance, Research, and Compliance provide operational leadership and technical expertise supporting the full lifecycle of sponsored research administration at Meharry Medical College. This role serves as a key liaison between research faculty, finance, compliance, and central administration to ensure consistent application of policies, accurate financial reporting, and successful grant execution.**Essential Functions (Principal Duties and Job Responsibilities):**### Grants Administration & Financial Operations* Support management of pre-award and post-award grant activities, ensuring compliance with institutional policies and sponsor requirements.* Assist in maintaining an inventory of active grant applications and awarded projects.* Support development and review of grant budgets, budget justifications, and financial components of proposals.* Assist with award setup, chart string/work tag configuration, and budget validation in institutional systems.* Monitor grant expenditures to ensure allowability, allocability, and compliance with sponsor and institutional guidelines.### **Post-Award Financial Management & Reporting*** Prepare and review financial reports including Federal Financial Reports (FFRs), invoices, and sponsor financial deliverables.* Assist with monthly and quarterly budget-to-actual reconciliations for principal investigators and research units.* Support grant closeout activities, including final financial reconciliation and documentation. Track reporting deadlines and ensure timely submission of required financial documentation.### **Compliance & Risk Management*** Ensure adherence to Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200) and sponsor-specific financial requirements.* Assist with audit preparation, documentation gathering, and follow-up on audit findings.* Support development and implementation of compliance procedures and internal controls.* Assist with monitoring subawards and subrecipient financial compliance.### **Systems, Workflow & Process Improvement*** Support implementation and optimization of grants management and ERP systems (e.g., Workday, Kuali).* Assist with workflow mapping, documentation, and process improvement initiatives.* Support development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for grants management functions.* Ensure accuracy and integrity of data across financial and grants management systems.### **Collaboration & Stakeholder Support*** Serve as a liaison between the Innovation Grants Hub, faculty, departmental administrators, finance, and compliance offices.* Provide guidance to investigators and departmental staff on grant financial policies and procedures.* Support training initiatives related to grants management, budgeting, and compliance.* Escalate risks or issues to the AVP with recommended solutions**Education and Experience Required:*** Five (5) years of leadership experience in a similar sized academic research organization with a similar level of responsibility.* Background in biomedical research grant accounting required.* Background in biomedical research financial compliance management required.* Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field.
