Director of Safety – Grand Rapids, MI (Job 1832)
This is a FULL-TIME position as an employee of our Transportation and Distribution client and REQUIRES commuting to the Grand Rapids, MI area, relocation assistance within the US is available.
Overview In this NEWLY CREATED role you will be leading the Occupational Safety (OS) function across all operations and locations for the organization in the US and Canada. You will define the culture and establish the strategy, systems, protocols and accountabilities that result in strong employee engagement, compliance, and operational excellence. You will strategically balance costs and risk-return on necessary and desired OS initiatives.
Minimum Requirements
Must be authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene or related discipline
7 or more years of OS leadership experience with at least 5 years of experience in a lead role for a company or business unit
Demonstrated success in building and driving a change to the organization’s culture of safety.
Knowledge of OSHA and Workers’ Compensation regulations
Demonstrated success designing and implanting initial and ongoing safety training programs
Ability to travel 25% of the time throughout the US and Canada
Additional Preferred Competencies
Professional Certification (CSP, CIH, COSS, MSP, CSD, etc.)
Experience with Canadian national and provincial safety regulations
Major Responsibilities
Act as the organization’s Subject Matter Expert on occupational safety matters
Establish the strategic vision and tactical implementation
Partner with Corporate and Regional Managers to establish and maintain a strong safety culture.
Lead development and continuous improvement of OS policies and procedures
Develop, implement, and support all company safety programs, policies, and procedures and ensure they are effectively communicated to all employees.
Ensure that all health, safety, and environmental programs are compliant with OSHA and other federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
Develop and oversee all metrics associated with safety performance
Oversee all environmental related recordkeeping and administration to include assisting operations in compliance with permits, operating conditions, sampling, and other regulatory requirements.
Conduct periodic OS audits/inspections and support Regional Managers to follow action plans ensuring prompt resolution of any identified OS issues.
Drive consistency and standardization of safety programs
Develop and provide company-wide training to employees in accordance with OH&S Act, OSHA, environmental regulations, and company standards.
Oversee insurance and workers’ compensation claims.
Advise and oversee legal matters pertaining to incidents and accidents
Prepare and present to the Senior Leadership Team on OS initiatives
Advise and oversee incident investigations and reporting
