Trees Atlanta is a nationally recognized non-profit community group dedicated to protecting and improving Atlanta’s urban forest through planting, conserving, and educating. Founded in 1985, Trees Atlanta works tirelessly to address Atlanta’s tree loss, protect its forests, and create new greenspace.

The Atlanta Beltline Arboretum is a certified Level II arboretum managed by Trees Atlanta, in partnership with Atlanta Beltline Inc, Atlanta Beltline Partnership, and the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation. The Arboretum is a public garden centered on native plants through education, restoration, demonstration, and display. Currently around 60 acres, in its completion is estimated to be over 100 acres, and is the longest accredited linear arboretum in the world.

Job Duties The Collections Specialist assists in developing and implementing specialized horticultural care of arboretum collections and their documentation. Job descriptions are guidelines that attempt to characterize major duties of employees and are subject to change as needs and programs change.

In This Position You Will Have The Opportunity To

Implement detailed, specialized, horticultural maintenance plans in designated, cultivated spaces of the Atlanta Beltline Arboretum such as stumpery garden, longleaf pine savanna, and bog, butterfly garden, pinetum, etc.

Maintain Arboretum collections (native oaks, azalea, hydrangea, pawpaw, etc.)

Lead small groups of volunteers on weekday maintenance projects

Safely operate Trees Atlanta vehicles (trucks and utility vehicles) and a variety of hand and gas-powered equipment including but not limited to string trimmer, water pump, leaf blower, shovel, rake, and backpack sprayer

Ensure accessions are up to date in the ArcGIS database, accession tags are present – reprinting and installing as necessary, and Arboretum markers and labels are accurate and up to the standards of both Trees Atlanta and Atlanta Beltline, Inc.

Assist in leading educational efforts in the Arboretum, as requested by Trees Atlanta’s education program through youth service-learning trips, custom tours, educational resources, etc.

Perform other duties as requested

Requirements

At least 1-2 years of related horticulture/gardening experience (e.g. public/private botanical gardens, arboreta, conservancies, cemeteries, etc)

Demonstrated interest, passion, and knowledge about trees, native plants, and urban ecology

Excellent organizational skills, drive, and attention to detail, with proven ability to work independently and with a team

Demonstrated volunteer coordination experience a plus

Physical Requirements

Scheduled work week Monday to Friday, 7:00am – 3:30pm, occasional Saturday work may be requested

Regular and reliable attendance, this position is not eligible for remote work

Willing and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions at all times of year, the majority of work for this position is performed outside

Ability to conduct repetitive, moderate to strenuous physical activity in the field and lift up to 50 pounds

At least 21 years old with a 3-year clear driving history (required to drive company vehicles)
