Role Description The primary responsibility of the Business Development Representative is to prospect and develop new customers for a specialty chemical service and distribution company. The individual will be assigned a territory and will be responsible for prospecting, developing new business, and maintaining new customers within their defined geography. The position involves working closely with Customer Service, Technical Service, and Operations personnel, as well as other members of the Sales Team, to meet customer needs and grow the business profitably.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Prospecting, New Business Development & Territory Management

Develop a pipeline of prospective customers in the territory.

Generate new sales opportunities by face‑to‑face cold‑calling, telephone communication, emailing, networking, knocking on doors, online meetings, etc.

Gain insight into the organization & processes of a prospect or customer to optimize the best approach to provide solutions and value.

Close prospects through the Northstar sales process from qualification to close.

Responsible for managing and profitably growing the new business that is generated in the designated territory.

Maximize new Bulk and Mini‑Bulk sales opportunities in designated territory.

Maximize sales and profits in their territory to reach company goals.

Promote and manage any assigned jobber partnerships in the territory.

Promote sales concepts through maximizing sales coverage, networking, participation in trade organizations, and working with field partners.

Communicate company direction, policies, and commitments to external customers.

Close long‑term profitable new business with healthy credit risk in accordance with guidance from sales management.

Develop a strong understanding of the company’s operational abilities.

Display an updated broad technical knowledge of the product line, equipment, and processes that will be utilized to capture sales opportunities and improve customers’ operating systems.

Coordinate customer opportunities in communication with operations to provide excellent customer service.

Initiate the customer complaint work process (identify and document using the form) and participate in issue resolution.

Organize and manage territory sales, potential sales, profitability, and opportunities.

Communicate territory opportunities to management through reporting and make recommendations for marketing and sales strategies within your assigned territory.

Compile and document data to track products, prospects, and progress in your territory.

Prepare an annual territory plan with customer‑specific measurable targets.

Safety

Understand and abide by all Northstar Chemical policies and procedures.

Promote and practice safe behavior: including driving, proposed installations, and presentations to customers and jobbers.

Participate in monthly safety training.

Administrative

Establish all new customer opportunities in an efficient manner, including customer site surveys, drawings, contracts, and any other internal or external customer documents.

Document price changes to the appropriate Northstar admin and to external customers.

Assist in the collection of customer debts exceeding payment terms.

Projects assigned by management related to product management, customer or product surveys, market studies, training, etc.

Qualifications An individual must be a self‑starter who must possess the “Hungry” and Hunter” sales mentality. This role is 100% new business development, so the individual must enjoy the continuous development of new customers through cold calling. Strong selling skills, including a demonstrated ability to close new sales, are essential. The following key attributes are preferred:

Bachelor’s Degree (preferably technical).

Minimum of 3 years of industrial outside sales experience to direct users (preferably in the chemical industry).

Must possess the “Hungry” and “Hunter” mentality.

Ability to create and maintain strong relationships with prospects through phone, email, and face‑to‑face communication.

Proven history of new business development in outside sales.

Work experience in chemical manufacturing, distribution, or related fields.

Mechanical aptitude.

Exceptional communications skills, both verbal and written.

Exceptional time management and organizational skills.

Ability to demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving abilities in a dynamic environment.
