
Job Title: Distribution Designer
The role involves independently developing design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems for electric utility customers, with a primary focus on overhead work. The individual will review client-provided work, assess scope requirements, and may conduct field work to gather necessary site information through photos and measurements.
Responsibilities
Independently develop design and construction work packages for electrical distribution systems.
Review and assess client-provided work and scope requirements.
Conduct field work, including taking photos and measurements, as needed to gather site information.
Create designs using Open Utilities software, determining power requirements, defining distribution panels, selecting equipment, and analyzing energy usage.
Build a Bill of Materials (BOM) to be entered into SAP/Material Tracking Software.
Assist with obtaining permits for utility lines crossing roads and other necessary permissions.
Submit completed electrical construction packages for approval and make revisions as needed.
Utilize additional software such as Poleforman or PLA for structural analysis and integrity assessment of utility poles.
Apply knowledge of NESC codes in design and material selection.
Collaborate with Quality Control approvers for necessary revisions before final submission.
Maintain frequent communication with clients via email, phone, and Teams.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Engineering/Engineering Technology/Design field or 2+ years of experience with computer‑aided design.
Experience with design software such as AutoCAD, Solidworks, Catia, Microstation, and Open Utilities.
Knowledge of power distribution design and Bill of Materials.
Understanding of NESC codes and utility distribution design.
Familiarity with GIS, permitting processes, and low voltage distribution.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Internships or co‑ops with major utility companies.
Experience with electric utility consulting firms specializing in distribution design or engineering work.
Skills in Quality Control or Quality Assurance (QA/QC) work.
Experience in training new employees or writing process standards.
Work Environment Work can be performed from home, a local office, a client office, and in the field. Field work locations are within a 60‑mile radius of Lansing & Owosso, MI.
Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lansing, MI.
Pay And Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00–$29.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
