About the Job The Colorado Springs Police Department is seeking a Police Training Specialist to join our Training Academy team. As a Police Training Specialist, you’ll play a critical role in preparing recruits and officers for success. Job Posting Statement This position is subject to budget required furloughs to be implemented in the 2026 calendar year, and any furloughs subsequently approved.

As a Police Training Specialist, You Will

Design and teach classes in the sworn basic recruit academy in accordance with Colorado P.O.S.T. rules, state statute and department policy.

Design and teach classes in the in-service training program.

Participate in physical conditioning of recruits to include running, workout regiments, and defensive tactics training.

Serve as “team lead” for a group of assigned recruits.

Assist with defensive tactics/arrest control training at the direction of the Academy Director.

Assist with firearms training, as needed, at the direction of the Academy Director.

Assist with driving training, as needed, at the direction of the Academy Director.

Assist the in-service coordinator with daily in-service training activities with cadre instructors as needed.

Generate documentation as needed related to sworn basic recruit academy training and in-service training. Produce training reports as required.

Participate as part of Colorado P.O.S.T. Subject Matter Expert committees as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to read literature, books, reviews, scientific or technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and/or legal documents.

Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.

Ability to read reports and provide constructive feedback to academy recruits.

Knowledge of technical field and use of analytical judgment.

Ability to make decisions appropriate to the organization.

Ability to work well with the team.

Ability to be flexible with work requirements and fill in for other instructors when needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a related area of study.

One year of full-time, professional experience in a related field; preferable in law enforcement.

Possess or obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver's license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges.

Education and Experience Equivalency One year of relevant work experience may be substituted for one year of required education (OR) one year of academic coursework relevant to this specific position beyond the minimum requirement may be substituted for one year of required professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience providing classroom instruction, especially to law enforcement officers.

Prior experience in developing lesson plans.

Experience in creating PowerPoint and video presentations.

Prior law enforcement experience.

Physical Demands Exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally; 10-25 lbs. frequently; or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly. This position is required to participate in the physical conditioning of the recruits to include running, work out regiments, and defensive tactics training.
