The Director of Hospital Medicine Programs (Administrative) provides strategic and operational leadership for a portfolio of hospital medicine services across the health system. This role oversees four established hospital medicine programs and leads the planning, development, and scaling of future programs in alignment with organizational growth, access, quality, and financial objectives. The Director partners closely with physician medical directors, APP leaders, hospital administration, nursing, quality, finance, and human resources to ensure efficient, high-performing, and sustainable hospital medicine operations. This position does not provide direct patient care.
Responsibilities
Program Oversight & Operations
- Provide administrative oversight for four existing hospital medicine programs, ensuring consistent operational performance and adherence to system standards.
- Standardize workflows, staffing models, scheduling processes, and operational best practices across programs while accounting for site-specific needs.
- Monitor operational KPIs including length of stay, throughput, capacity utilization, productivity, patient experience, and cost performance.
- Identify and implement process improvements to optimize inpatient flow and operational efficiency.
Strategic Growth & Program Development
- Lead the strategic planning and execution of new hospital medicine programs, including market assessments, operational design, and implementation planning.
- Develop business cases, staffing models, budgets, and financial pro formas for program expansion or new site development.
- Coordinate program launches, including hiring timelines, onboarding workflows, and operational readiness.
- Support stabilization and performance optimization of newly launched programs.
Physician & APP Partnership
- Serve as the primary administrative partner to hospital medicine medical directors and APP leaders.
- Support provider recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, productivity tracking, and engagement in collaboration with Medical Affairs and HR.
- Facilitate regular communication, performance reviews, and problem resolution across physician and APP teams.
- Promote a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Quality, Compliance & Patient Experience
- Partner with Quality, Risk, and Patient Experience teams to support quality improvement initiatives and regulatory compliance.
- Ensure hospital medicine programs meet accreditation, regulatory, and organizational requirements (e.g., CMS, Joint Commission).
- Support data reporting, dashboards, and action plans tied to quality, safety, and patient experience outcomes.
Financial & Business Management
- Manage operating budgets and staffing expenses for hospital medicine programs.
- Analyze financial performance, productivity, and cost drivers; identify opportunities for optimization.
- Support contract management, service agreements, and vendor relationships as applicable.
- Collaborate with finance on forecasting, variance analysis, and long-term financial planning.
Stakeholder Engagement & System Integration
- Act as a key liaison between hospital medicine programs and hospital leadership, nursing, case management, and ancillary services.
- Support care coordination and transitions of care initiatives in partnership with outpatient and specialty services.
- Align hospital medicine operations with broader system goals related to access, growth, and value-based care.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, business, or related field.
- 7+ years of progressive healthcare operations or practice management experience, preferably in hospital-based services.
- Demonstrated experience overseeing multiple programs or sites within a healthcare system.
- Strong knowledge of healthcare operations, staffing models, quality metrics, and financial management.
- Proven ability to lead through influence in physician-led environments.
Preferred
- Master’s degree (MBA, MHA, MPH, or related field).
- Experience supporting hospital medicine, emergency medicine, or other inpatient service lines.
- Experience leading program growth, new site launches, or service line expansion.
