
Sales Tax Consultant
(6 months, Fully Remote – Must be located on the East Coast)
The Sales Tax Consultant supports US Retail internal sales and use tax compliance operations. This role focuses on maintaining accurate sales tax and licensing records, setting up and maintaining customer resale certificates, preparing back‑period returns, and assisting with the resolution of state and local tax notices.
Key Responsibilities US Sales & Use Tax Compliance
Prepare and file US sales and use tax returns for back periods as needed.
Review transaction data for taxability and ensure proper application of US sales and use tax rules.
Maintain accurate internal documentation and compliance records.
Gather proper sales tax backup for returns to ensure readiness for potential audits.
Licensing & Registration Support
Develop and maintain a comprehensive list of US sales tax licenses and non‑physical location business licenses.
Set up automated internal email reminders for periodic renewals.
Ensure timely renewal of sales tax and business licenses for all states that impose sales tax.
Assist with new registrations or updates to existing accounts.
Coordinate with Vertex Compliance and Registration Teams for new US sales tax registrations.
Customer Resale Certificate Management (Future Task)
Set up and maintain customer resale certificates, ensuring all documentation is complete and properly stored.
Monitor certificate expiration dates and request updated documentation as needed.
Ensure customer resale certificates meet state‑specific requirements for audit readiness.
Tax Notice Handling
Review incoming US state and local sales tax notices.
Identify required actions and escalating issues when necessary.
Draft responses or gather supporting documentation for resolution.
Additional Responsibilities
Handle sales tax–related projects as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field (preferred).
Experience: 2+ years of experience in US sales and use tax compliance within a large organization.
Knowledge: Familiarity with multi‑state US sales tax rules and customer resale certificate requirements.
Skills: Strong organizational skills, high attention to detail, and the ability to manage recurring deadlines independently.
