Reports To: Sales Applications Engineering Manager

Position Summary The Application Sales Engineer is responsible for analyzing customer specifications and collaborating with sales and engineering teams to develop technical solutions, proposals, and pricing for capital equipment projects. This role bridges customer needs with engineered solutions by providing technical expertise throughout the sales process, from initial application evaluation through proposal development and bid review.

Essential Functions

Analyze customer specifications and recommend appropriate product configurations to meet application requirements.

Evaluate cleaning and process applications, including conducting cleaning studies and documenting corresponding process requirements.

Collaborate with customers, sales, and engineering teams to assess equipment needs and define system requirements.

Support sales efforts by providing technical expertise during customer meetings, bid reviews, and proposal discussions.

Develop detailed proposals, quotations, and estimates, including responses to Requests for Proposal (RFPs) and industry-specific solutions.

Prepare preliminary layout drawings and P&IDs for sales proposals.

Provide technical and non-technical support regarding the use, operation, installation, and maintenance of equipment.

Evaluate and support products requiring advanced technical knowledge, including material handling systems, automated equipment, and computer‑controlled machinery.

Monitor material and labor costs and update estimates and proposals accordingly.

Review completed and shipped projects with engineering and manufacturing teams to evaluate costs, identify savings opportunities, and incorporate improvements into future estimates.

Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Expertise Education & Experience

Associate degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field required; bachelor’s degree preferred.

Minimum of 2 years of experience supporting sanitary process applications within the food, beverage, and/or biopharmaceutical industries.

Technical Knowledge

Familiarity with sanitary components and fluid engineering fundamentals.

Understanding of process controls and PLC operation.

Ability to read and interpret P&IDs and CAD drawings.

Experience developing written technical proposals and sales documentation.

Knowledge of capital expenditure justification, including total operating cost analysis and ROI calculations.

Understanding of product costing and experience working toward profitability goals.

Software & Technology Skills

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, CRM systems, and CAD tools such as SolidWorks.

Strong typing, spelling, grammar, and Excel skills.

Ability to quickly adapt to new technologies and systems.

Environmental Conditions

Up to 20% travel may be required for customer visits, supplier meetings, or trade shows.

Exposure to elevated humidity, loud noise levels, and certain contaminants when in manufacturing or shop environments.

Physical Demands

Primarily office‑based with periodic travel and visits to customer and manufacturing facilities.

Requires regular sitting, typing, and computer use.

Occasional standing, walking, climbing, lifting, balancing, stooping, and handling of equipment during reviews or site visits.

May require ladder use and adherence to safety protocols, including wearing PPE such as safety glasses, steel‑toed shoes, gloves, helmets, and hearing protection.

Must be able to lift and maneuver up to 10 lbs without restriction.

Ability to use a keyboard, calculator, telephone, and other standard office equipment.
