
Position Summary
The Non-QM Underwriter evaluates and underwrites complex Non-QM, Jumbo, manual, and conventional loans (including FHA and VA) in accordance with Company and Investor guidelines, following company policies and procedures under general supervision. This role involves making sound underwriting decisions, ensuring all decisions meet legal and policy requirements, and maintaining high standards of compliance, quality, and efficiency. Performs all duties in accordance with the company’s policies and procedures, all US state and federal laws and regulations, wherein the company operates. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Including, but not limited to, the following: Underwrite complex Non-QM loans to multiple investor guidelines, including Jumbo and other manual underwriting products, as well as conventional FHA and VA loans. Performs a thorough analysis to ensure the quality of each loan, determine compliance with Company and Investor guidelines, and evaluate collateral to confirm property meets investor standards, with appraisal quality and completeness acceptable. Applies and interprets company underwriting guidelines to make sound credit decisions, completing credit, income, and property analyses; ensures proper audits are completed and verifies consistency of loan file information. Identifies risk factors within each loan, utilizes resources, tools, and documentation to detect red flags, clear inconsistencies, and determine acceptability for specific loan programs. Reviews and evaluates credit information on mortgage loan documents, determines any conditions, stipulations, or pre-funding requirements, and reviews/clears them as received. Completes required additional products and system tasks (e.g., Appraisal Logging, DU/LP/GUS, Encompass fields, Investor Specific forms, income worksheets). Communicates regularly with Processors, Loan Officers, sales teams, and operations teams regarding loan status, outstanding issues, and resolutions via current technology. Follows file and check order as conditions are signed off and new information is received; maintains file order integrity and conversation log in Encompass to track file progress. Pipeline management: Provides timely and high-quality performance reviews within 24-48 hours for initial underwrites and condition reviews; underwrites a minimum of 3 new loans per day and reviews all condition loans within 24-48 hours. Completes system fields/screens missed by other team members during approval review. Resolves and responds to post-closing credit exceptions from investors and auditors within 24 hours on underwritten loans. Maintains current working knowledge of loan products, investor guidelines, updates, and trends applicable to the underwriting position. Assists with training needs of other mortgage positions and departmental support staff when necessary. Ad hoc reporting and assists with resolving outstanding issues as they arise. Maintains highly confidential information concerning loan applicants. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications
A thorough knowledge of mortgage loan underwriting, including Non-QM, Jumbo, manual, FHA, and VA products. Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. High integrity, confidentiality, and customer service skills required. Ability to work in a fast-paced, fluid environment; self-starter, self-reliant, dependable, with flexibility in decision-making and strong problem-solving skills. Ability to organize and prioritize workload, handle detailed assignments, meet deadlines, and work on several tasks simultaneously. Excellent computer skills, including intermediate experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Office products; experience working in a paperless environment preferred. Paperless Loan Origination System experience preferred. Constant contact with Loan Officers and internal office staff; significant coordination of various duties required. Ability to properly interpret DU, LP, and GUS; communicate and document findings; demonstrated satisfactory knowledge of DU and LP input required. Education, Experience, and/or Licenses
Minimum of five (5) years of specific manual underwriting experience, including thorough knowledge of FHA mortgage underwriting. Must have experience working with Non-QM loans for the last 12-24 months. FHA Direct Endorsement designation and/or VA SAR designation highly preferred. DU and LP experience required; GUS experience preferred. Pay: $70,000 to $100,000 Benefits
