
The Day Camp Director oversees the overall planning, coordination, and daily operations of the day camp program, including supervision of staff, program implementation, safety oversight, and communication with families. This role provides leadership to ensure a safe, structured, and engaging environment while supporting staff development and maintaining compliance with departmental policies and child safety standards.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide leadership and supervision for all day camp operations to ensure overall program success, participant safety, and a positive camp environment.
Plan, coordinate, and oversee program schedules, activities, special events, and field trips.
Ensure compliance with all departmental policies, procedures, risk management standards, and Child Safety Policy requirements.
Supervise, train, support, and evaluate Assistant Directors, Site Leaders, and Group Leaders.
Conduct staff orientation, trainings, and ongoing coaching throughout the camp season.
Serve as primary contact for parent and guardian communication, including addressing concerns and resolving conflicts as needed.
Monitor program safety, behavior management practices, and incident response procedures.
Maintain communication and coordination with recreation coordinators and Parks & Recreation leadership.
Evaluate program outcomes and assist with end-of-season reports and staff performance evaluations.
Perform additional duties as assigned by program leadership.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Engage with the children and staff.
Plan and lead weekly staff meetings.
Visit each site daily: solve problems in a timely manner if necessary.
Process registrations and maintain records.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
College graduate with education background preferred. High school graduate.
At least 5 years working with children, ages 6-12, in a structured setting such as another day camp, youth group, boy/girl scout leader, day care leader, etc.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Must be an excellent problem solver and solve issues in a timely manner.
Must be able to discipline appropriately and mediate situations.
Help and encourage anyone who needs advice or a helping hand.
Support others through teamwork, dedication and guidance in order to achieve the completion of a task or activity.
Must have complete knowledge, or proven ability to learn, the rules and regulations of the city program including the child Safety Policy.
Must be friendly, active, and like to interact with children of all ages.
Ability to develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in a community program.
Have knowledge of developmental skills of children ages 6-12.
Show the ability to conduct job interviews and be able to determine if candidate is a fit for day camp program.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL SKILLS
Frequently required to walk, sit, and talk or hear.
Occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools.
Occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Occasionally works in outside weather conditions.
Occasionally exposed to wet and/or hot, humid conditions.
Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
Noise level in the work environment can be moderately loud while in the field.
DRUG TEST REQUIRED The City of Elkhart is a Drug Free Workplace. Therefore, a post offer, pre-employment drug screen is required. Random drug testing may be conducted after employment.
