Real Estate Officer – Temporary Advance your career while making a real difference in the community you serve. Join the City of Durham’s General Services Department (GSD) and contribute to the stewardship of the City’s physical and environmental assets.
Description This position is devoted to the management of land, buildings, and right‑of‑way, including the acquisition and disposition of City property and facilities. The role requires independent evaluation and analysis, exercise of judgment, and the ability to select and apply criteria to resolve problems and make recommendations.
Duties / Responsibilities
Acquire, lease, and dispose of City property in accordance with established policies; inspect properties; determine property values; assess damage; verify ownership; negotiate with owners; perform property management functions; and coordinate sales by administering the bid process.
Prepare and review project plans, maps, plats, surveys, contracts, reports, records, manuals, and other legal, real‑estate, and related documents; maintain databases and online systems; research, compile, and analyze data; develop and make recommendations; and ensure accuracy and compliance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
Coordinate with residents, property owners, businesses, and other City departments or external agencies to provide relocation assistance; order real‑estate services; respond to requests, inquiries, and complaints; assist with planning and implementing departmental operations; troubleshoot issues and, when necessary, escalated sensitive matters to higher‑level staff.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or a directly related field.
One year of real‑estate experience.
Valid, unrestricted North Carolina driver’s license. If holding a license from another state, must be willing and able to obtain a valid NC license within 60 days of hire.
Preferred Skills
North Carolina Real Estate Broker’s License.
ADA, Physical, and Other Requirements • Sedentary work: reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. • Weight: Up to 10 pounds of force occasionally; negligible force frequently. • Working conditions: Indoor office and/or outdoor environments; may travel to external organizations and locations.
