The City of Norfolk's Department of Recreation, Community Wellness/Recreation Programs is seeking a Recreation Specialist to assist in the planning and implementation of outdoor recreational programs.

Departmental Starting Hiring Salary $51,610.42
Essential Functions
Assists in planning, implementing, and evaluating outdoor recreational programs (such as but not limited to kayaking, camping, hiking, cycling, rock climbing, orienteering, etc.) and daily activities of the center.
Serves on committees for the planning and marketing of events.
Assists in managing facility operations and aids employees.
Interacts with children, teens, adults, and seniors.
Participates in activities in addition to providing informational materials, directing volunteers and part‑time employees as well as contributes to the cultural growth of individuals.
Assists with the management of daily operations of the facility by scheduling and monitoring volunteers and part‑time employees, compiling figures and preparing reports, providing lesson plans and program planning, authorizing permits, and collecting fees for programs and rental of the facility. Interacts with citizens by responding to inquiries, and contributing to the growth and development of youth, teens, adults, seniors, and volunteers.
Markets the recreation program by distributing flyers and announcements to the community and submitting press releases.
Performs related duties by carrying out administrative responsibilities, transporting patrons, submits and writes initiatives and provides input on purchases.
Education and Experience Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
Associate Degree in Recreation and Tourism or some college of any closely related field.
At least one-year experience in outdoor recreation and leisure activities.
At least one-year experience working with youth, teens, adults, or seniors.
Valid Driver's License.
CPR/First Aid Certification within six months of employment.
Additional Information & Requirements Work Location: Various recreation centers in the City of Norfolk
Work Hours: Monday to Sunday; 6:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.; not to exceed 40 hours per week; flexible hours will apply including weekends, holidays, and special events.
Benefits Summary
Regular full‑time and permanent part‑time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long‑term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.
Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full‑time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending on funding and authorization.
Temporary/seasonal and part‑time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.
Retirement Contributions If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre‑tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre‑tax payroll deduction.
Tuition Assistance Program The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self‑development and education. Permanent full‑time and permanent part‑time classified, unclassified permanent, full‑time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
