Transmission Civil Estimating Engineer/Designer
SCS Technical Shared Services, Substation Project Support
This position will be based out of The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL
Position Summary This position is responsible for providing scoping, estimating, and conceptual design services in support of Southern Company’s substation civil-site development. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting transmission capital projects through complete and accurate cost estimates, substation site selection feedback, and providing project scope recommendations. The position will predominately support Alabama Power Company projects but will sometimes assist with the other Southern Company entities.
Work Location & Travel
This position will be based out of The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL
Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently four (4) days in-office and one (1) day telecommute (subject to adjustment)
The position will require field visits and will likely involve occasional overnight travel
Expected travel, approximately 25%
Position Responsibilities
Create a safe and ethical work environment through total personal commitment to safety excellence
Apply civil engineering expertise to accurately "scope" projects and to provide quality cost and duration estimates in a timely fashion
Develop detailed conceptual design packages used to produce accurate cost estimates and project schedules and as the basis for detailed design activities
Participate in, support, and lead as appropriate, Southern Company Transmission activities and initiatives
Serve as a damage assessment team member after major storms after receiving the company-provided training
Attend site visits throughout Alabama and Mississippi, to review proposed substation locations, potential interconnections, and existing substations requiring potential footprint modifications
Position Qualifications Education
BS Degree in Engineering (Civil preferred) or applicable degree and experience
Professional Engineering (PE) license is a plus
Experience
Experience with Civil Site Development preferred
Experience in Transmission Civil Design preferred
Experience working with Operating Company personnel is a plus
Demonstrated leadership on projects involving multiple work groups and departments
