
The Design Engineer III is responsible for designing fire protection systems, conducting all steps to ensure quality and compliance, and coordinating with cross-functional teams and customers.
Role and Responsibilities
Design moderately complex fire sprinkler systems
Produce hydraulic calculations and system sizing for projects
Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as sales, purchasing, fabrication, installation, and service to ensure water-based fire sprinkler system designs meet customer needs, quality, safety standards, and project timelines
Coordinate with engineers, contractors, and AJHs independently
Ensure design adheres to state and local standards for the design of water-based fire sprinkler systems
Use CAD in the design of fire protection systems
Conduct construction site review/survey on buildings if needed.
Submit plans to General Contractors/owners and follow specifications.
Finalize fabrication techniques with the appropriate stakeholders
Complete final shop drawings showing all pertinent information
Generate materials lists for completed designs
Compile the foremans pack, including all necessary forms and paperwork.
Process all necessary close-out documents
Mentor and review the work of Level I and II designers
Qualifications and Education Requirements
NICET III certification and/or 5+ years of current fire sprinkler design experience
Comprehensive knowledge of NFPA standards 13, 13R, 13D, 14, 20, 22, and 25
Ability to interpret and apply complex code requirements
Working knowledge of one or more of the following CAD software platforms: AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit, Autodesk BIM 360, Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, Hydra CAD, AutoSPRINK, SprinkCAD, or SprinkFIT
Ability to complete BIM coordination
Apply mathematical concepts, such as geometry, fractions, and measuring
Ability to read and interpret documents, such as blueprints, codes, standards, specifications, safety rules, and operating and maintenance instructions
Analytical and critical thinking skills
Ability to communicate effectively in person and electronically
Time management and organizational skills
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
Physical Demands While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects, tools, or controls. This position requires mobility, with minimal physical exertion.
Working Conditions Usual office working conditions. The noise level is typical of most office environments. Can be exposed to sound and noise levels that are distracting when on a jobsite.
