The Lead Structural Designer is responsible for the supervision and coordination of the production of concrete and steel 3D models and 2D deliverables in accordance with the project requirements under the supervision of the Lead Structural Engineer. The Lead Structural Designer is required to apply specialized and/or advanced modeling and/or drawing techniques in order to produce timely deliverables to meet project schedule.

The Lead Structural Designer supervises and coordinates a wide range of projects encompassing all structural concrete and steel structures in a wide range of industries such as mining, heavy industrial and infrastructure. Activities include the coordination of concrete and steel modelling for both front end planning studies and the detailed engineering phase for multidisciplinary projects.

Principle Duties And Responsibilities

Supervise and coordinate the work of the designers and senior designers in the preparation of models and contract drawings, record keeping and other statistical work

Supervise, produce and maintain technical and engineering drawings using 3D CAD software as required

Coordinate layout work and design details and checking prior to release

Create and update project History files and drawing files/folders

Supervise coordination with designers and engineers of other disciplines and participate in formal engineering review processes in conjunction with Design Coordinator

Multi‑discipline coordination and preparation of design concepts for internal and client review in conjunction with Design Coordinator

Ensure coordination with Design Coordinator for clash detection and project deliverables

In conjunction with engineering staff, produce detailed engineering models, engineering drawings and documentation for identified and approved concepts/projects

Ensure all discipline workflows are maintained and coordinate between engineers and designers and ensure all designers are adequately trained in all tools used to produce deliverables

Ensure all designs follow appropriate safety in design principles with regards to access and egress, constructability and clean plant design

Ensure quality of all models and drawings including accuracy of models and layout of drawings

Assist Lead Structural Engineer with planning and maintaining modelling/drafting schedules and budgets

Qualifications And Experience

Associate’s Degree or equivalent (civil/structural)

Minimum 7 years of experience in 2D design and 3D structural modelling with AutoDesk® software, including, but not limited to AutoCAD®, Revit® and Civil 3D®. Experience with Bentley® products (Aecosim, Open Building, Microstation) is a plus

Experience with large concrete and steel structures is required

Experience in the heavy industrial industry is preferred

Must function independently with minimal supervision in a multi‑discipline team setting

Must mentor / assist on the job training of designers

Must demonstrate strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot issues

Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment

Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to convey project technical information to project managers, clients and peers

Must demonstrate organisational skills, and the ability to multi‑task, prioritise, take direction, and provide direction to others ensuring the quality of deliverables

Strong computer knowledge is required including Microsoft® Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint)

Excellent safety awareness
