Position Summary
Middlebury College’s Summer German School(a university-level summer program)is hiring for a German-speakingtheater director (m/f/d)during the summer2026session (June28th–August 13th),on Middlebury’s main campus in Vermont.Designatedas an AATG German Center of Excellence in 2013, Middlebury’s German School and its unique 7-week program combine a cultural immersion environment with rigorous daily classroom instruction. This is an opportunity to join a community of learners by activelycontributing tothe German School’smission and cultural offerings andstudentsas they pledge toread, write,and speak exclusively in German. Please note that this position is for summer 2026only!
The position is underwritten by the Max Kade Foundation in New York.
In addition to the salary, lodging and a complete meal plan will be provided. Insurance is available.
Position Description We are lookingfor a young and dynamic theater directorfrom the German-speaking countriesto direct/ lead our annual co-curricular theater project.This project should allow non-nativeamateur actors(who may or may not have experience on the stage) to fully participate in the production and performance of a play in German (no translated plays) and contribute to the overall mission and lifeofMiddlebury’s German School by bringing some of the German countries’ theater culture to our campuswhile adhering to our ethos ofinclusivity, intercultural engagement, and open-mindedness.The project runs over the course of our summer session with a public performance at the end of our time together.Limited support (set building/ props, costumes) is available, but this is a low-budget project within our academic overallframework.—We expect our colleague to be fully immersed in theSchool’slife—live on campus, dine with theSchooland participate in other co-curricular and cultural events.We especially invite young directors from diverse backgrounds to apply.
Qualifications At least three years ofexperience indirecting forthe (professional) stage, formal training in directing preferred. Experience with diverse groups ofamateuractors, experience with non-native speakers of allproficiencylevelsa plus.Basic Englishproficiencyrequired, but all work in summer will be conducted in German.
