Marketing & PR Account Executive (Agency)

JDI (Jones-Dilworth, Inc.), Austin, Texas, us, 78716

Save Job

At JDI we love two things: science and the art of communication.

We’re a boutique marketing and design firm; our mission is to make precedent-setting science and technology companies well-known and understood. We aim to become the best marketing agency for science companies and leave the world a better place.

At JDI, we spend 2-3 days per week in our office in East Austin and take every other Friday off. JDI is a family business, and we’re a highly collaborative team that strives for excellence in everything we do.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR We’re looking for a well-rounded and experienced marketer with an interest in science. Our ideal candidate has 3-5 years of experience in marketing as well as these qualities:

Great consultant and communicator

Strong and poised presence, comfortable being in front of people and sharing ideas.

Ability to craft emails, essays, or posts in a way that moves people to think differently.

Has a knack for helping people understand concepts or ideas. Knows how to take something you understand and help someone else get it, too.

Can form a strong POV and argue for it, but equally ready to shift thinking when presented with convincing evidence or arguments. Can debate, but also able to listen well to be a good thought partner for clients.

Track record of success in multiple marketing disciplines and interest in continuing to grow your areas of expertise

Experience doing naming & branding, messaging and positioning, and media relations.

Ability to lead client teams and manage multiple accounts at once

Ability to manage accounts to client goals, budget, and timeline.

Comfortable both executing and delegating work to others.

Can keep track of multiple streams of work and deadlines.

Interest in science and technology

Energized by learning new things, and you aren’t intimidated by subjects totally out of your wheelhouse. Can read about enterprise software one day and protein folding the next, and finds both genuinely exciting.

Loves a good challenge

Ability to take information from different places and see how it all fits together.

Undaunted by complexity, can’t help but look for patterns and creative solutions.

People who thrive at JDI are driven to improve their craft and eager to be accountable for results for our clients. They’re comfortable making decisions, even in the face of ambiguity. They build healthy relationships with clients and colleagues alike.

WHAT YOU'LL DO Your days will be a mix of both strategy and tactics. You’ll do the hands‑on work of creating press lists, drafting press releases, and pitching as much as developing and driving the marketing strategy.

Media relations will also be a core part of what you do, leveraging existing relationships with reporters and creating new ones. In addition to developing the strategy and preparing clients for their media moment, you’ll secure and staff interviews and see pitches through from concept to coverage.

You’ll do a lot of persuasive writing, including client counsel, thought leadership, and ad copy. You’ll be a strong counselor to clients in writing, on calls, and in person, communicating directly and truthfully.

We have a small marketing team. Some of your time will be spent working alone, but the majority will involve working shoulder‑to‑shoulder with other marketers and executives, as well as collaborating with clients.

You’ll have several clients at a time. Major strategic decisions are always made in collaboration with the executive on your account. You’re in charge of running the program, serving as the primary point of contact, and ensuring we’re on track and on budget to hit client goals. You’ll delegate but also collaborate with your account team. On other accounts, you’ll be supporting another account lead.

Agency life, at JDI or anywhere, is fast‑paced with many quick‑turn deadlines and competing priorities. Our clients need our best effort. That said, what matters most to us is not flawless performance, but the willingness to dive in, meet challenges head‑on, handle setbacks, and adjust course.

MORE ABOUT JDI Our typical client has made a breakthrough and is looking to turn their innovation into a product or service they can sell. They usually lack an internal marketing team, and that’s where we come in. Sample clients include: Reflective, Cultivarium, and Juniper Genomics. More on our website.

Working in science and technology means that it’s often difficult to distill what our clients do into simple language. One of the joys of our work is when a complex scientific breakthrough is made clear, relevant, and compelling to a relevant audience. Another challenge is figuring out who the customer is, and what they want — sometimes the breakthrough is so new that it’s not immediately clear who has a need for it.

Increasingly, we’re also focused on experience design and community‑building. We’re helping clients create genuine connections and word‑of‑mouth behaviors through unique experiences like intimate dinner series, customer summits, and digital communities. We think about how brands show up in ways that create real, memorable experiences. Read more about what we’re building here: https://www.jones-dilworth.com/our-frontier/

Rarely do our clients have a field of competitors that closely resembles them; their marketing challenge is more immediately telling the world what is possible because of their invention. That means our work is constantly pushing the bounds of marketing – unique challenges require unique and well‑executed solutions.

We work across the marketing spectrum — everything from traditional PR, design and development, product strategy, naming and branding, market research and audience development, messaging and positioning, user acquisition and retention, advisory board development, VC fundraising, executive recruitment, business development, and more.

We’re also a design firm, and one of the unique parts of the role is the close relationship you will have with designers. Our designers put message and content first, and as such, work hand‑in‑hand with marketers.

We’re a small company where people look after one another, and where we all can grow, personally and professionally. We believe in telling the truth and giving good advice. You can read our company values and mission here: https://bit.ly/JDImissionandvalues

At JDI, we believe in building a diverse team; our differences inspire creative thinking and improve our ideas. The life experiences of our team — from farmwork to writing music reviews to running marathons —enrich our work and our points of view. We're committed to examining our unconscious biases, creating a safe environment where everyone can perform at their best, and ensuring that identity is never a barrier to advancement. We appreciate candidates who are returning to the workforce after raising children or caretaking. We know that differently‑abled candidates are assets to our team. We support Fair Chance principles, and we are an equal opportunity employer.
