
Business Insider is hiring a tech editor to drive coverage that gets inside Big Tech companies and startups, and illuminates the culture of Silicon Valley.
We're looking for a proven editor or proven reporter ready to make the jump into editing. This editor will assign and edit creative, engaging stories that capture what it's really like for people working in tech and starting businesses in this fast-changing sector, and that help readers across business understand the hottest topics in tech.
This editor will manage a group of reporters primarily based on the West Coast, with beats ranging from LLMs to robotics companies. Our tech team spans the globe, and we are looking for someone able to collaborate across geographies and time zones.
This tech editor will think strategically about the team's coverage mix, innovate ways to set our reporting apart, coach reporters on getting and confirming tips, edit for clarity and narrative, while upholding high standards of accuracy and rigor. The person who will thrive in this role is enthusiastic and strategic about leading their team, flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced newsroom, and a team player who is excited about working in an inclusive, fun environment.
This editor will report to our tech executive editor. Our preferred location for this position is based in the Bay Area, but we are open to candidates in other major tech hubs.
Key Responsibilities
Edit and strategize on agenda-setting tech stories, high-impact scoops, features, and enterprise. Oversee and guide a team of reporters including in source development and breaking scoops and strong writing. Advise and coach reporters to deliver original reporting that other publications need to chase and our audience needs to read. Successfully juggle edits for scoops, exclusive features, and ambitious projects. Collaborate across the newsroom to enhance our tech coverage by working with data graphics, events, features/investigations, and the video teams depending on the best way to tell tech stories and engage our audience The ideal candidate will also:
Experience covering tech or a high curiosity about the industry. Have a proven track record of excellent news judgment, journalistic success, and the ability to decide quickly on coverage priorities. Great communication and listening skills. Have experience developing newer reporters, while inspiring star journalists to stretch themselves. Be well-versed in beat reporting and able to coach reporters on sourcing tactics that help them break into major companies. Be a team player who actively collaborates with BI's other reporting teams to elevate all of our tech coverage. Have the ability to adapt quickly and be flexible to changes in the industry. Salary & Benefits:
