
Overview
We are seeking a temporary, intermittent
PCB Designer – NASA Avionics Systems
to join the JETSII contract and support projects at NASA Johnson Space Center. The role involves designing high‑density, high‑speed PCBs for space applications, collaborating with cross‑disciplinary teams, and ensuring compliance with IPC, MIL‑STD, and NASA standards.
Responsibilities
Report directly to the Electronics and Electrical Section Manager and collaborate within a group of over 45 Engineers and Designers.
Create multilayer PCB designs and layouts in Altium Designer.
Implement analog, digital, high‑frequency, matched differential pairs, and high‑power circuitry using through‑hole and surface‑mount technologies.
Generate Gerber data and compile all fabrication files.
Develop PCB footprints for the master library by interpreting manufacturer datasheets.
Document and archive schematic diagrams, PCB assembly drawings, mechanical support drawings, and wiring harness drawings.
Communicate with vendors to provide clarity during PCB fabrication.
Work with Electrical Engineers to produce design packages and with Mechanical Engineers to ensure proper form, fit, and function.
Perform other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
Typically a high school diploma (or equivalent) with at least 15 years of experience, or additional experience/education in relevant physical sciences.
Proficiency in Altium Designer and extensive component library management.
Comprehensive knowledge of IPC standards, including IPC‑2222 and IPC‑2221A.
Experience in high‑density/high‑speed PCB design and low‑noise/EMI control.
Demonstrated experience with multi‑layer IPC Class 3 designs for space applications.
Familiarity with MIL‑STD, commercial components, and NASA design/drawing standards.
Ability to produce drawings conforming to ASME Y14.5 using AutoCAD or Pro/E.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Project, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook).
Excellent communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.
U.S. citizenship or permanent residency; must pass a U.S. government background investigation.
Preferences
IPC Certified Interconnect Designer (CID) certification.
Experience with other PCB design packages such as PADS, Mentor Graphics, ORCAD Capture.
Knowledge of impedance control, differential pairs, buried capacitance, and high‑frequency applications.
Experience in high‑power design, thermal management, and working with diverse form factors (PCIe, PCI, VME, etc.).
Familiarity with PCB fabrication and assembly processes.
