Job Summary

The Grading Foreman oversees and coordinates daily grading operations on construction projects, ensuring safe work practices, efficiency, and quality outcomes. This role is responsible for supervising crews, managing equipment utilization, and ensuring that grading work aligns with project specifications and schedules.

Responsibilities

Supervise and lead grading crews in daily operations, including excavation, embankment, fine grading, and compaction.

Read and interpret plans, blueprints, and grade stakes to ensure accurate execution of grading work.

Help coordinate the use of heavy equipment such as dozers, motor graders, scrapers, and compactors.

Monitor progress and quality of grading work, identifying and resolving issues proactively.

Maintain job site safety in accordance with company and OSHA standards.

Track production and provide daily reports to the Superintendent or Project Manager.

Coordinate with surveyors, engineers, and subcontractors to ensure alignment with grading plans.

Train and mentor crew members, promoting professional growth and development.

Monitor material usage and minimize waste.

Assist in planning and scheduling work and resources efficiently.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in construction or civil engineering a plus.

Minimum 5 years of heavy civil construction experience, including 2 years in a supervisory role focused on grading.

Strong understanding of grading techniques, soil types, and compaction methods.

Proficient in reading civil construction plans and grade stakes.

Working knowledge of GPS and laser-based grading systems.

Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

Summary:

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Underground Utility Foreman to lead and manage our construction crews in the installation and maintenance of underground utilities, including water, sewer, and stormwater systems. The Foreman will oversee daily operations on-site, ensure safety compliance, and maintain project schedules and quality standards. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in utility construction and a strong ability to lead and motivate a team. The following responsibilities are not all-encompassing, as specific work tasks vary.

Pay Rate:

$110,000 - 130,000 annual salary; based on experience

Responsibilities

Team Leadership:

Supervise and direct a crew of utility workers, operators, and laborers to ensure efficient and safe project execution.

Project Planning:

Coordinate daily work schedules, allocate resources, and ensure work aligns with project plans, specifications, and timelines.

Safety Oversight:

Enforce company and OSHA safety standards, conduct safety meetings, and ensure the use of proper protective equipment and procedures.

Quality Control:

Inspect work progress, verify alignment and grading of pipes, and ensure installations meet required specifications and industry standards.

Equipment and Materials Management:

Ensure proper use, maintenance, and storage of tools, equipment, and materials on-site.

Problem-Solving:

Identify and resolve on-site issues, including conflicts with plans, schedules, or unforeseen challenges.

Communication:

Serve as the primary point of contact between the crew, project managers, and other stakeholders. Provide regular updates on project status and progress.

Training and Mentorship:

Train crew members on proper techniques, safety practices, and efficient work methods.

Qualifications

Minimum of 5 years of experience preferred.

Strong industry experience specific to construction, or equivalent knowledge.

Understanding of utility installations, including water, sewer, and stormwater systems.

Proficient in reading blueprints, utility maps, and construction plans.

Knowledge of grade control, trench safety, and pipe installation techniques.

OSHA 30 certification preferred.

Experience with GPS equipment and machine control systems preferred.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and manage grading crews and equipment on-site, maintaining safety and efficiency.

Coordinate with Project Managers, Superintendents, Subcontractors, Inspectors, and Field Technicians.

Review and interpret plans, specifications, and soils reports.

Maintain production schedules and promptly report any delays or obstacles.

Ensure proper implementation of GPS systems and grade checking tools.

Monitor project performance, production rates, and equipment usage.

Maintain detailed documentation of work performed and daily activities.

Uphold company safety standards and participate in regular safety meetings.

Qualifications

5+ years of earthwork and grading experience.

5+ years of supervisory experience on mass grading projects.

Must demonstrate direct, hands‑on experience in grading and earthmoving tasks, including moving dirt and installing pipes.

Must have experience in Engineering Construction projects and experience with a subcontractor/sub grading contractor.

Must have mass grading experience and be comfortable operating in high-volume, large-scale projects.

Must be a hands‑on leader who actively works alongside the crew and understands the work first‑hand.

Proficient in reading construction plans, specifications, and soils reports.

Familiarity with GPS and automated grade control systems.

Strong understanding of equipment usage, production rates, and construction methods.

Demonstrated leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

Computer literacy and solid documentation practices.
