Complex Claims Director

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for a Complex Claims Director on our Architects & Engineers (A&E) Professional Liability team. At BHSI, our claims professionals are an integral part of our business. Every claim is handled with the utmost skill by seasoned and dedicated claims professionals. We are seeking an experienced professional to join our growing team in the Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, New York, or Plymouth Meeting office. This position is a great opportunity for practicing lawyers looking to transition out of a law firm as well as claim professionals with professional liability claims experience.

In this role, the Complex Claims Director will have a unique opportunity to handle and adjust all facets of Architects & Engineers Professional Liability claims in a highly collaborative team environment, dedicated to best in class claims handling.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Manage and adjust Architects & Engineers Professional Liability claims impacting primary and excess policies while ensuring the highest level of customer service and technical claim file quality.
Proactively handle claims from first notice of loss through ultimate resolution while advising internal partners and meeting with clients and brokers.
Collaborate and partner with the insured and broker in the handling and adjudication of claims.
Analyze and draft coverage letters as appropriate and communicate coverage positions effectively.
Conduct, coordinate, and proactively handle the investigation process and ensure timely resolution of claims.
Directly and closely monitor assignments to experts and defense counsel as necessary.
Evaluate information related to coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of exposure to the insured and the company.
Draft reports, set reserves within authority, or make claim recommendations concerning reserve changes.
Travel to conferences, mediations, and trials as necessary.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

A minimum of 10 years' experience handling professional liability claims and/or construction claims, or matching equivalency; and be able to demonstrate technical competence in the handling of specialized claims.
Ability to work independently and assimilate learning materials on many different subjects from various sources.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, investigative and negotiation skills.
Ability and willingness to work effectively in a team environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Demonstrated experience in handling and adjusting claims in multiple jurisdictions and must possess, or successfully obtain, the required licenses.
JD preferred.

Job Opportunity Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for a Complex Claims Director on our Architects & Engineers (A&E) Professional Liability team. Our claims professionals handle every claim with skill and dedication. We are seeking an experienced professional to join our growing team in the Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, New York, or Plymouth Meeting office. This position is suitable for practicing lawyers transitioning from law firms as well as claim professionals with professional liability claims experience.

In this role, the Complex Claims Director will handle and adjust all facets of Architects & Engineers Professional Liability claims in a highly collaborative team environment dedicated to best-in-class claims handling.

Duties And Responsibilities

Manage and adjust Architects & Engineers Professional Liability claims impacting primary and excess policies while ensuring the highest level of customer service and technical claim file quality.
Proactively handle claims from first notice of loss through ultimate resolution while advising internal partners and meeting with clients and brokers.
Collaborate and partner with the insured and broker in the handling and adjudication of claims.
Analyze and draft coverage letters as appropriate and communicate coverage positions effectively.
Conduct, coordinate, and proactively handle the investigation process and ensure timely resolution of claims.
Directly and closely monitor assignments to experts and defense counsel as necessary.
Evaluate information related to coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of exposure to the insured and the company.
Draft reports, set reserves within authority, or make claim recommendations concerning reserve changes.
Travel to conferences, mediations, and trials as necessary.

Qualifications, Skills, And Experience

A minimum of 10 years’ experience handling professional liability claims and/or construction claims, or equivalent experience; demonstrate technical competence in handling specialized claims.
Ability to work independently and assimilate learning materials on many subjects from various sources.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, investigative and negotiation skills.
Ability and willingness to work effectively in a team environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Demonstrated experience in handling and adjusting claims in multiple jurisdictions; possess, or successfully obtain, the required licenses.
JD preferred.

The base salary range for this position is $140,000 to $160,000, along with annual bonus eligibility. Total compensation is determined by relevant skills, location, and experience. We value our teammates’ capabilities and character as demonstrated by our culture.

This role will lead the development and execution of the complex liability claims operation, ensuring timely, fair, and consistent claim outcomes while maintaining strong service levels and financial discipline.

The ideal candidate brings deep experience handling complex litigated liability claims, has led high-performing teams, and can build designated to teams to handle claims by jurisdiction.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the Complex and Commercial Liability claims operation, overseeing high‑exposure and litigated claims.

Build and manage jurisdiction‑specific claims teams, with a strong focus on New York and California.

Set and enforce consistent claim handling standards, service levels, and technical excellence.

Develop and lead claims managers and teams, driving accountability and performance.

Oversee severity management, reserving discipline, and effective claim resolution.

Partner with Underwriting, Actuarial, and Legal to align claim strategy with portfolio objectives.

Drive analytics, continuous improvement, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance.

Provide executive leadership with reporting, insights, and recommendations on claim trends.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

5–10+ years of experience handling complex, litigated liability claims with significant exposure.

Proven leadership experience managing claims teams, including adjusters and management‑level staff.

Strong technical expertise in liability evaluation, coverage analysis, litigation management, and claim strategy.

Experience supporting serious or high‑severity loss programs with disciplined reserving and resolution.

Ability to maintain service standards while managing time‑sensitive, high‑exposure claims.

Strong executive communication skills, sound judgment, and a high level of accountability.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior responsibility for large loss, catastrophic, or complex claim portfolios in New York and California.

Juris Doctor (JD) strongly preferred.
