The Director of Quality and Safety will lead the Quality and Safety team leaders to transform the quality of safety. The position works closely with system, regional or market, and entity leadership to improve quality of clinical care, reduce preventable harm and improve experience for team members and patients. All work processed by the incumbent is considered confidential and protected from discovery, pursuant to state statutes.CORE FUNCTIONS1. Responsible for oversight of quality improvement leaders and their teams within a defined market or region. Oversight includes assessment of clinical performance trends and related care delivery practices within a defined region (or cohort). Collaborates with enterprise executives, care management colleagues, administrators, physicians, clinical leaders and team members to identify improvement opportunities utilizing quantitative techniques, as well as knowledge of health care operations and systems thinking. Leverages and supports the use of relevant clinical and healthcare delivery literature, evidence-based practice and existing external benchmark data whenever possible.2. Executes the Banner Health clinical strategic plan to improve clinical performance and patient safety; identifies causes of variation, serves as a subject matter expert and supports implementation of systems and processes to facilitate effective clinical practice, improve reliability, and reduce preventable harm. Collaborates with other Care Management stakeholders to align performance improvement and safety activities with the enterprise clinical strategic plan.3. Leverages Vizient to identify opportunities within each relevant cohort and assists QI leaders and appropriate operational or business owners in prioritization and development of improvement plans. Conducts in-depth assessment of qualitative and quantitative data within the respective region (or cohort). Triangulates information to support administrative and clinical decision-making. Collaborates with the appropriate leaders and/or process owners to identify opportunities for improvement.4. Responsible for oversight of development and implementation of annual quality and safety plans in partnership with quality improvement leaders, administrative leaders, and service line or process owners within the region. Strategizes with regional leadership to identify opportunities and develop action plans at the regional and local levels that align and support the Banner Health clinical strategic plan and enterprise priorities.5. Manages and coaches quality improvement leaders and their teams. Provides guidance on system defined improvement methodologies, processes, and safety philosophies. Hires, mentors, develops, supervises, conducts performance evaluations, and directs the workflow for designated staff including quality improvement leaders and their teams.6. Serves as a resource to regional improvement teams for planning, implementation, and coordination of local or regional activities to maximize clinical and operational outcomes while promoting patient safety and a high-quality experience for team members and patients. Prioritizes work and makes staff assignments, when necessary. Ensures that goals and objectives are met in a timely and effective manner for routine work and major projects.7. Maintains clinical performance assessment, improvement, change management and project facilitation expertise through independent study, internal development courses, attending education workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional organizations. Maintains proficiency with Vizient risk-methodology, data elements, and utilization.8. Responsible for operational oversight of QI within a designated Banner Health region and contribution to system-level QI activities. Leads the execution of Banner Health clinical strategic plan at the market/regional level. Internal customers include all assigned entity administrators, physicians, corporate team members and administrators and Banner Health team members. External customers include accreditation and regulatory organizations, payers, patients and physicians.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSRequires Master’s degree or equivalent experience in a healthcare related field.Must be a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) and/or Certified Professional in-Patient Safety (CPPS).Must have a proficiency level typically attained with five years’ experience in Quality Management / Performance Improvement. Requires at least two years leadership experience or demonstrated leadership abilities through successful large-scale projects. Must possess demonstrated flexibility in responding to the needs of multiple constituencies with a service-oriented philosophy. Demonstrated ability to lead and facilitate multi- disciplinary teams. Must possess demonstrated skill in problem analysis, project management, conflict resolution and oral and written presentations. Requires ability to balance and manage multiple concurrent projects.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSRN license in state worked OR a clinical background with current license/certification or other equivalent experience.
