Book Production Associate, One‑Color Team, Random House Children’s Books (Hybrid)
What was your favorite book when you were a kid, tween or teen? If you love The Book Thief, Wonder or Everything, Everything, and enjoy working on a variety of one‑color children’s and young adult book formats, this is the role for you.
The Corporate Bookmaking team at Penguin Random House seeks a Production Associate to support the Random House Children’s Publishing Group and several of its imprints, including Bright Matters Books, Knopf, Delacorte, Labyrinth Road and Random House. Reporting to the Production Manager, you will manage your own list of softcover and casebound books through the complete production process—from cost estimating and release of files to warehouse delivery and archiving of final files.
The Role
Consult with the publishing group to develop specifications for individual titles
Cost estimate, including multiple options for a variety of book formats
Enter and maintain book specifications in SAP
Create book schedules and maintain dates in the Bookmaking Control Center system
Communicate daily with domestic and overseas suppliers
Preflight text and component files in InDesign and Acrobat
Release files to composition, component and book vendors, traffic and review all proof passes
Issue prepress and manufacturing purchase orders and approve invoices
Archive final print files
The Essentials
Minimum of 1 year of relevant book production or project management experience
Knowledge of text composition, color correction, printing, binding, and special effects is a plus but not required
Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and solve problems effectively
Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills
Proficient basic math skills to complete book cost estimates accurately
Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office
Familiarity with SAP, Box, and Teams is a plus
Salary: $56,000. All positions are eligible for an annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results. This hybrid position requires onsite work, including color‑correcting proofs, reviewing samples with Epson proofers, and attending in‑office meetings at 1745 Broadway, NY, NJ, CT, & PA.
