
Recreation Aid for Children with Disabilities - Seasonal, Part-Time, non-benefit

This is a seasonal position working at the summer camps for children with disabilities.
The season runs from May 11 through August 8.
At the end of the season, based on availability, there may be an opportunity to transition to a year-round position.
We will be hiring throughout the posting period until all of the seasonal positions are filled.
The Town of Oro Valley Parks & Recreation Department is seeking Recreation Aides to support the I Can Too! Program, a specialized recreation program for children with disabilities. Recreation Aides work alongside recreation staff to ensure the safe, inclusive, and high-quality delivery of programs. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about working with children with special needs in a fun, supportive, and structured camp environment.
Provides one‑on‑one or small‑group support to children with special needs to enable successful participation in I Can Too! programs.
Supports children during activities, transitions, and self‑care tasks as needed.
Maintains a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for participants, staff, and volunteers.
Sets up, cleans up, and maintains activity areas and equipment.
Interacts with participants in a positive, helpful, and professional manner.
Assists with camp activities and adaptation to ensure accessibility.
Supports independent work, group activities, games, and special projects.
Takes initiative to anticipate needs, respond to changes, and assist during emergencies.
Performs additional duties as assigned.
CAMP‑SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists in implementing instructional activities, including self‑help skills and behavior management strategies.
Supervises youth with special needs in seasonal camps.
Helps children integrate into the camp environment and build positive relationships with peers and staff.
Actively engages with campers, getting to know their individual needs, interests, and strengths.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written communication.
Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with staff, participants, and families.
Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow up on work assignments with minimal supervision.
Knowledge of youth recreation programs and basic rule interpretation.
Knowledge of, or ability to learn, Town and Department policies and procedures.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to remain calm and professional in emotionally charged situations.
Flexibility, patience and optimism when supporting children with special needs.
General understanding of behavioral characteristics associated with developmental or behavioral challenges.
One (1) to two (2) years of experience working with children with special needs.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment.
Work may be performed at various locations.
May include lifting, feeding, and providing other personal care assistance as required.
Must be able to lift or move up to fifty (50) pounds.
Regular, daily attendance is an essential function for this position.
