Job Summary The Assistant Director of Facilities and Plant Operations reports directly to the Director of Facilities and Plant Operations and is responsible for the day‑to‑day operations and maintenance of campus buildings and grounds, including Brunswick Campus, Camden Center, and other off‑campus locations. The role includes first‑line supervision of Facilities and Plant Operations personnel, assignment and review of work based on skill sets, guidance and direction, quality assessment, feedback for continuous improvement, and assistance in resolving employee concerns and complaints. This position is designated as Essential Personnel and a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
Responsibilities
Supervise the operations and maintenance activities of Facilities and Plant Operations, including building and equipment maintenance, custodial services, landscaping and grounds functions, and event set‑up services.
Coordinate and monitor work‑order scheduling, equipment maintenance, and inventory.
Monitor operational efficiency of all plant equipment and facilities, overseeing scheduling and maintenance of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other systems.
Develop, implement and sustain a preventative maintenance plan for all college facilities.
Advise and assist the Director in developing an annual Major Repair and Renovation (MRR) funding request.
Assist the Director in timely completion of projects, minimizing disruption to mission‑critical activities and mitigating risks.
Handle and direct special projects assigned by the Director.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications Educational Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent.
Associate's degree or significant relevant experience in facilities management, plant operations, or a related field.
Other Required Qualifications
Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, methods, and materials used in building operations, as well as applicable codes, laws and regulations.
Demonstrated analytical, planning, and organizing skills.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Current valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record, passing a yearly Motor Vehicle Report review.
Pre‑employment drug test requirement and subject to random testing.
Required Experience
More than five years of experience in facilities management, plant operations, or building maintenance with increasing responsibility.
Preferred Qualifications Additional Preferred Qualifications
Supervisory experience with skilled trades, custodial teams, or maintenance technicians.
Ability to read architectural drawings, mechanical schematics, and technical manuals.
Experience managing emergency response protocols and campus incident coordination.
Preferred Educational Qualifications Bachelor's Degree.
Preferred Experience
Ten or more years of experience in facilities operations, maintenance, or plant management in a higher education, healthcare, or large‑campus environment.
Experience implementing change and improving performance through quality improvement initiatives.
Ability to listen and interpret user needs and apply knowledge to solve varied problems.
Abilities
Ability to handle stress and perform responsibilities at a high level in a dynamic environment.
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Knowledge
Comprehensive knowledge of facilities operations, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, grounds, custodial, and building systems.
Strong understanding of preventive and corrective maintenance and work‑order tracking systems.
Skills
Skilled in project coordination, including scheduling, contractor management, and procurement.
