Job Summary The Instructional Designer (ID) will guide and support the development of innovative online programs and courses through direct consultation with individual faculty and faculty groups regarding online course design, delivery, and quality assurance. The ID will work within AU Online and collaboratively with IT, faculty, staff, and administrators to design, develop, and deliver high quality asynchronous online courses and programs. Each development will effectively integrate active learning activities, technology tools and assessments that enhance student learning to meet both instructional quality and student experience standards.
This individual will assist with quality assurance for AU Online developed courses. They will contribute to the development of processes and procedures that increase consistency, quality, and regulatory compliance of AU Online courses. The successful candidate will be highly knowledgeable in instructional design, be a creative problem solver, and participate in a spirit of positive support for AU Online's efforts.
Responsibilities Develop Instructional Experiences
Collaborate with colleagues and faculty in designing effective asynchronous online learning.
Employ industry standard practices, learning theory, and design principles to develop high quality learning experiences.
Assist faculty in determining which educational technologies best support their course learning outcomes.
Assist faculty in the development of multimedia to be incorporated into their courses.
Project manage the design and development of multiple online asynchronous courses during each development cycle.
Create high quality and valid assessments which produce artifacts for assessing learning – both formative and summative performances to maximize learner understanding and retention of content.
Source/create dynamic content to ensure learners remain engaged.
Review and update existing courses in collaboration with the faculty course developer to ensure contemporary relevance.
Make informed recommendations on changes and adjustments to learning experiences using performance data, and instructor/student feedback as required.
Work closely within the IDEA team resources, websites, and handouts for all training delivery channels.
Quality Assurance
Support quality assurance processes for online courses: apply rubrics to evaluate the quality of course design and teaching practice; consult with instructors regarding accessibility of electronic materials, copyright, and compliance with pertinent regulations, policies, and accreditation standards.
Faculty Professional Development, Training and Consultations
Support the development of faculty training materials and experiences which focus on engaging and interactive online courses.
Consult with faculty as they incorporate software and educational technology into the development of learning experiences.
Ongoing Professional Growth
Update and improve skills and knowledge related to the instructional design process, new models of online instruction, and emerging technologies.
Other
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications Master's degree from an accredited college or university in instructional design, educational technology, or a related field.
OR
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of related experience working with a learning management system.
Required Experience
Experience designing learning experiences, facilitating training, and delivering presentations to adult learners.
Work in a higher education setting.
Experience with online course development and integration of educational technology in the learning environment. Experience with audio and video production.
Preferred Qualifications
Several years of experience as a contributing team member.
Experience designing asynchronous and synchronous online instruction in higher education.
Successful online and/or hybrid teaching experience in higher education.
Experience implementing a variety of rubrics and standards for quality assurance purposes.
Demonstrated success working with faculty members or other instructional staff to improve teaching and learning.
Experience developing and facilitating professional development opportunities for faculty members.
Experience with learning analytics.
Presentation and/or publication in peer‑reviewed contexts.

Employ a variety of educational technology tools and authoring platforms (e.g., Desire2Learn, Brightspace, Echo360, MS Teams, Adobe Creative Suite).
Functional use of in‑web related technologies, including HTML.
Project Management and Team Interactions
Manage multiple development projects concurrently.
Maintain detailed records during development and continuous improvement processes.
Employ effective organizational skills.
Collaborate with team members as needed.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days/M-F (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).
Pay Band: B10.
Salary: Minimum $52,500 per year – Midpoint $65,600 per year. Salary to be commensurate with the qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum midpoint).
Recruitment Period: 2/11/2026 – Until Filled.
