Millbrook UMC is a welcoming and engaged church located in North Raleigh, NCwith one traditional service at 9:00am and a contemporary service at 10:30, as well as multiple joint services throughout the year. Millbrook is the home to a variety of ministries that bring together both traditional and contemporary worshipers as one church. Millbrook UMC is 156 years old, and is both “old” and “new,” especially through the merger with a church start with contemporary worship style in 1993.

Our traditional worship services utilize The United Methodist Hymnal (1982) and The Faith We Sing, for congregational singing and can integrate music from other sources. Great care is taken to create a cohesive service that unites around a central theme that is engaging for both in person and online congregants.Our sanctuary houses a Yamaha NU1X hybrid digital piano and a Rogers T807 Trillium two manual organ.

We are seeking a Choir Director and Organist to plan, lead and accompany music for the traditional worship service, including a choir of 12-18 voices, and to lead our handbell choir of approximately 10 ringers. Our ideal candidate is a gifted musician andcollaborative leader with the ability to help create meaningful worship experiences for our congregation, not only in the traditional service but in joint services as well. Our Choir Director/Organist is a member of our dynamic and collaborative staff who work together to not only make each individual worship service cohesive and meaningful, but cooperate with each other and lay leaders to serve the whole.

This is a part time position(approximately 20 hours/week),reporting to the Senior Pastor, and working closely with multiple other staff membersand lay volunteers.

DUTIES AND GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist clergy and staff in the implementation of music appropriate for the theme of the Sunday traditional worship service and special services.

Attend weekly staff meetings/worship planning, and Church Council meetings (6-8/year)

Prepare, rehearse and perform appropriate organ/piano music and hymn accompaniment in one weekly traditional worship service and other special services

Select, rehearse, prepare, and accompany choir anthems and other choral selections/responses for weekly traditional worship service and special services.

Recruit and train choir members

Plan and lead a weekly choir practice

Maintain a music library (Library is developed)

Plan and direct music for special seasons of the year

Develop and manage an annual music budget

Lead the choir as a community, promoting unity and positive morale, not only within the choir but within the church as a whole

Collaborate with contemporary worship leader and pastors for joint and special services.

Lead handbell choir in rehearsing and performing 2-3 xs/year.

First right of refusal for funerals and weddings (for honorarium). If unavailable, then secure a substitute.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s Degree in Music preferred. Commensurate study or experience will be considered

Experience in the leadership of church music programming and performance is preferred

Skills in collaboration, interpersonal relationships, planning, and flexibility required

Ability to select and teach music appropriate for the setting in which it is performed using a volunteer choir of varying talents

Talented in piano and organ performance

Understand and adopt Methodist doctrine in music ministry

Ability and willingness to learn church planning tools (i.e. Realm church management software and Planning Center worship planning platform) with help provided.

SALARY:$18,000-22,000Commensuratewith experience and responsibilities
