What you'll do: The Diversion Specialist supports retail stores across Northern California providing hands‑on operational guidance, training, and coaching to store teams; conduct inspections, assess recycling potential, and evaluate trash service needs. As part of the Customer Success team. You’ll work directly with the Field Team Regional Manager and the Customer Solutions team you’ll partner closely with store leadership to implement, maintain, and continually improve commercial organic recycling programs, ensuring proper separation of organic and non‑organic materials.

This role requires curiosity, investigation, and analysis. Success in this role is achieved by creating a solid partnership with Store Managers and their teams.

Reporting to the Field Team Regional Manager, you’re a strong self‑starter and able to organize your time and priorities with minimal supervision.

Travel Requirements: This position requires 80% travel within Northern California. Minimal national travel (2‑3 special projects per year).

Location: The person in this role will be required to live in Northern California (Alameda or Contra Costa County is ideal and candidates here will be given priority due to customer locations).

Responsibilities

Assist Stores in meeting compliance expectations per State and Local ordinances.

Manage, maintain and update programs with key organics recycling customers.

Implement, review and develop commercial organic recycling programs.

Maintain file system of customer information.

Complete waste audits for customers.

Be knowledgeable in all area of customer’s waste and recycling streams.

Prepare and deliver presentations for customer’s management and employees.

Help develop and utilize training aids.

Accurately assess barriers and solutions to barriers in each individual retail store.

Accurately assess customer’s recycling potential and trash service needs.

Inspect stores to verify organic material is being separated from non‑organic material.

Prepare and present audit reports that convey recycling goals and opportunities in a professional manner.

Review solid waste collection service invoices for accuracy and opportunities.

Provide advisory service in connection with retailer’s interaction with waste haulers.

Maintain strict adherence to privacy of retailer’s proprietary information.

Help retailers identify opportunities to increase food donation.

Provide ongoing performance metrics to ensure full participation, identify potential shrink opportunities and trash service right sizing.

What we’re looking for:

Experience in retail, supermarket, or waste management experience.

Current and valid driver's license and successful completion of an MVR is required

Comfortable driving to multiple store locations on the average workday.

Motivated self‑starter as most workdays will be unsupervised.

Ability to communicate effectively to individuals and groups.
