Position Overview
The Manager, StateMedia Relationsis responsible forsupportingConsumer Brands’media relations efforts to tella compelling industry narrativeand advance the organization’sstateadvocacy agenda. Reporting to the Director, Media Relations, this person will workas a strategicpartnerwith the Director,as well ascollaboratively withthe communications team,spokespeopleand issue expertsto develop key messages, industryand executive thought-leadership opportunitiesand comprehensive earned media campaignsacross a variety of priority issue areas.The ideal candidate has a media relations backgroundwith knowledge of state-level policylandscapes.
This role is an individual contributor position and does not include formal people management responsibilities at this time.
Key areas of responsibility Media Relations
Develop andmaintainrelationships with reporters from traditional, industry trade,politicaland emerging media outletsin priority states.
Develop andmaintainkey relationships with communications staff in targetedstate legislativeoffices and key committees.
Proactively build press awareness of industry campaigns,issuesand events.
Identifyand elevate targeted mediaopportunities to increase brand awareness and profile of the association brand and itsstate lobbyingteam.
Monitor state media environments and respond to breaking news.
Media Communications
Write talking points, press releases, media advisories, Op-Eds, letters to the editor, blogpostsand executive briefing documents.
Maintain an acute understanding of policy and industry issues including understanding their history, currentactivityand future developments.
Collaborate across functions to develop key messagingon advocacy issues.
Orchestrate andaccompanyspokespeopleon interviews.
Other
Be proactive and creative in pitching ideas internally to breakthrough with key messages.
Provide information, updates and background materials to Consumer Brands members,staffand stakeholders on all media matters.
Create and update media lists.
Track media coverage and update mediatrackerdaily.
Requirements Experience & Education
3+ years in media role or related work.
Existing relationships with media preferred.
Experience working in state politics is a plus.
Good understandingof the current media landscape.
Skills
Strategic and creative thinker.
Superior project management skills including the ability to juggle multiple prioritiesandmanage deadlines.
Exceptional interpersonal skillsincludingthe ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, effectively navigateconflictand build andmaintainstrong relationships with the media and other key stakeholders.
Comfort around senior level management – internal and external.
Strongunderstandingof Microsoft Office Suiteand earned media tools such asMuckrackandMeltwater.
Strong knowledge of AP Style.
