The Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo, Inc . has an exciting opportunity for a Deputy Executive Director – Civil Practice to contribute to our impact on Western New York communities. By providing executive leadership and management of the Civil Legal Services and Attorneys for Children Units, this position ensures the civil practice programs are effective and successful by creating, implementing, monitoring, evaluating and refining policies, practices, and initiatives. The Deputy Executive Director also plays a critical role in the overall success and impact of the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo, Inc.’s mission by supporting the Chief Executive Officer with operational management. Key Responsibilities: The primary duties includes but is not limited to: Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure efficient bureau operations in collaboration with the Deputy Executive Director – Criminal Practice. Oversee and ensure that daily operational procedures, workflows, and business practices consistently align with internal policies and applicable regulatory requirements, maintaining compliance and operational efficiency across all functions Identify, evaluate, and monitor funding sources and grant requirements to ensure compliance, maximize funding opportunities, and support the bureau’s financial sustainability and programmatic goals. Collaborate with the Finance Department to conduct thorough reviews of program and operational budgets, monitor spending patterns, and assess contract performance to ensure fiscal accountability, compliance with funding guidelines, and alignment with organizational goals. Provide strategic and operational support to the Chief Executive Officer by assisting in the oversight of daily organizational activities, ensuring smooth execution of internal processes, and facilitating cross-departmental coordination to meet organizational objectives. Evaluate the performance of the Chief Attorneys through regular monitoring and providing timely, constructive feedback to support professional development and accountability. Completes annual performance evaluations. Conduct regular meetings with Chief Attorneys and Managing Attorneys to review activities or staff concerns. Support Chief Attorneys to ensure that supervisors provide appropriate leadership, supervision, feedback, and communication to staff. Provides guidance and support to Chief Attorneys in conducting their annual performance evaluations. Assist in addressing and resolving internal employee grievances, complaints, workplace concerns, and disciplinary investigations. Ensures that client concerns are addressed by appropriate supervisory staff, monitors union grievances, or other claims through disposition. Communicates with judges and court personnel regarding operations of the Bureau. Serve on county and state committees to advance civil legal services and client interests, including policy-setting bodies. Contribute to the negotiation and development of collective bargaining agreements in coordination with labor representatives and organizational leadership. Additional responsibilities also include: Attend Board of Directors meetings. Partner with the Human Resources Director to advance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion education across the organization. Collaborate with Bureau leadership to support, implement, and promote DEI initiatives that foster an inclusive workplace culture and enhance services to diverse client populations. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications: One of the following combinations of education and previous experience is required: At least 10 years of experience as an attorney in the practice of civil law or a combination of training, education and experience that is equivalent to the above employment standard and that provides the required knowledge and abilities. Active membership in the New York State Bar. Five (5) or more years of management experience preferred. To be successful as the Deputy Executive Director – Civil Practice you will need to possess: Detailed knowledge of funding sources and grant requirements. Demonstrated knowledge of statutory laws related to practicing Federal Bankruptcy Law and New York civil law, including Bankruptcy Code, Bankruptcy Procedure, Civil Procedure Law and Procedures, Domestic Relations Law, Family Law Statutes, Mental Hygiene Law, Real Property Law, Real Property Actions and Proceedings Law, Estate Powers and Trusts Law, Surrogate’s Court Procedures Act, New York State Rules of Professional Conduct, New York Standards of Civility, Ethics for Attorneys for Children, and any other laws and rules governing the practice areas engaged in by the civil practices areas from time to time. Proven ability to effectively supervise diverse personalities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across diverse audiences and settings. Demonstrated ability to think strategically and analyze information and data. Ability to lead with vision and manage effectively across organizational systems to support long-term goals. Ability to adapt to changing needs and priorities as well work independently and collaboratively. Proficient in computer software packages, including but not limited to, Microsoft applications and digital legal research using online databases and legal information platforms. Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse and interdisciplinary teams while ensuring an inclusive work environment. Ability to travel up to 20%.
