Job Description – High School: Assistant Band Director 2026-2027 (2600005D)
Job Overview The High School Assistant Band Director will assist the Head Band Director with the planning and implementation of the instructional program for the campus concert bands, marching bands, color guard, and jazz bands. The incumbent will assist in managing aspects of the campus band program and fulfill professional responsibilities related to teaching high school band courses and assisting with the management of the instructional program. Overnight travel, as well as prolonged or irregular work hours are required.
Position Description Essential Duties and Responsibilities Teaching and Learning
In coordination with the Head Band Director, implement, monitor, and maintain progress with group and individual instruction, rehearsals, and performances for the concert bands, marching bands, jazz ensembles, and color guard programs
Plan appropriate learning activities including determination of appropriate type and level of materials and implement an instructional program that provides an appropriate learning sequence, considering different learning styles and a range of abilities
Assess student achievement as related to desired educational goals and outcomes and maintain appropriate assessment documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes
Manage allotted learning time to maximize student achievement
Manage the behavior of learners in the instructional setting to ensure the environment is conducive to the learning process; assist and participate in management of student behavior in all parts of the school, center, school grounds, or work site both during and outside of school hours; monitor and enforce compliance with the Fort Bend ISD Student/Parent Handbook and Student Code of Conduct
Ensure classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe, and conducive to learning and that materials are accessible to students and in good condition
Program Supervision
Perform all duties as assigned by the Head Band Director, campus administration, and/or Director of Fine Arts
Implement sectional, small group, and large ensemble instruction in the fall and spring semester to provide adequate preparation for all concerts, competitions, auditions, and events
Continually communicate with students on instructional expectations and keep them informed of their progress in meeting those expectations
Ensure continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, to keep them informed of student(s) progress
Comply with established FBISD policies and procedures regarding fundraising, budget management, inventory and materials management, student travel, employee travel, private lessons, and the submission of entry forms and fees by prescribed deadlines
Provide proper student supervision during and after all program activities until all students have left the area
Professional Responsibilities
Ensure standards of professional conduct are maintained (Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators)
Understand and uphold all rules, regulations, and dates that pertain to the instrumental music program (UIL, TMEA, and FBISD policies all apply)
Participate in all UIL, TMEA and FBISD sponsored events; encourage student participation in all competitions/events related to the instructional program
Participate in in‑service, professional learning activities, and staff meetings as required or assigned, including meetings with the Director of Fine Arts
Support and assist feeder programs by attending concerts/shows and offering reasonable assistance to these programs
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Music Education or Music Performance
Valid Teaching Certification Issued by Texas Education Agency appropriate to subject and grade level of assignment EC‑12 Music, or has received statement of eligibility
Minimum of 4 years participation in high school or college marching band and/or drum corps
Minimum of 1 year full‑time teaching experience preferred
Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to use social media effectively
Demonstrated proficiency on a wind or percussion instrument
Ability to interact appropriately with the public, District staff, and parents
Ability to collaborate with colleagues on the campus and in the instructional feeder pattern
Ability to market the instructional program
Ability to maintain emotional control under stress
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions The work environment characteristics and physical demands described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work is performed in classrooms, offices, workstations and meeting rooms.
The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work related items weighing less than 40 pounds, such as books, papers and presentation materials. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.
