Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The mission of the Division of Student Success is to work in partnership with the University community to deliver high quality services to facilitate the recruitment, retention and graduation of a diverse student population and strive to provide service, leadership, and transitional student support for UNCG . The Division of Student Success is committed to designing, implementing, and providing the services necessary to promote student success throughout the entire student life cycle from day one to diploma. This division includes the offices of University Advising, New Student Transitions & First Year Experience, Students First Office, Academic Achievement Center, TRIO Programs, UNCG Guarantee, GEAR UP UNCG , the STEM Learning Center, and the Communication Lab.
Position Summary
The Communication Lab is an integral component of the Division of Student Success. The Assistant Director (with a focus on written communication) will support the Director in enhancing students’ writing skills across disciplines, focusing on one-on-one consultations and active learning strategies. This role involves overseeing the day-to-day operations of both the physical and online Communication Lab, assisting in staff training, and contributing to program development that aligns with the Lab’s commitment to fostering inclusive and engaging communication support for a diverse student population.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in English, Education, or a closely related field.
Minimum 3 years of experience in writing center support, communication center support, or academic support services.
Demonstrated knowledge of writing center pedagogy and student-centered tutoring approaches.
Experience in training and supervising student workers in an academic support setting.
Experience and expertise in teaching at the college level in English or a related field.
Strong commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the academic community.
Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in a leadership or supervisory role within a writing center or communication center.
Proficiency with digital platforms, such as Microsoft 365 and online tutoring tools.
Experience in curriculum development and working with faculty to integrate writing support into coursework.
Record of engaging in research or assessment related to writing center effectiveness and student outcomes.

Center Operations and Management - Assist in managing the Communication Lab’s daily operations, ensuring effective service delivery in both in-person and online formats.
Support program development and innovation to meet the evolving writing needs of UNCG students.
Percentage Of Time 30%
Key Responsibility
Staff Training and Development - Contribute to the recruitment, training, and evaluation of student staff, emphasizing best practices in writing tutoring and peer support.
Develop and facilitate ongoing professional development opportunities for staff to enhance their tutoring skills and knowledge.
The AD may be asked to teach the training course for undergraduate consultants up to once yearly.

Assessment and Continuous Improvement - Collaborate with the Director in conducting assessments and research initiatives to measure the Communication Lab’s impact on student writing competencies and identify areas for improvement.
