Graphic Designer (Visual Information Specialist, Grade N21) WHO WE ARE Montgomery County Office of Public Information (PIO) is the communications hub for the County government, responsible for effectively conveying the County Executive’s vision, priorities, and initiatives to the public. Serving a diverse community of over 1.1 million residents, PIO develops and delivers timely, accurate, and engaging content across a wide range of topics.

Our team is made up of skilled professionals specializing in public relations, graphic design, website management, social media, television and video production, event planning, marketing, advertising, and photography. Together, we ensure that the County's message reaches all communities through clear, inclusive, and impactful communication.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR The Office of Public Information is seeking a talented and experienced Graphic Designer to join our creative team. This is a fast‑paced environment that often requires meeting tight deadlines and responding to last‑minute requests driven by local and national news cycles. We’re looking for a visual communicator with excellent design skills and a strong understanding of digital and print media who can develop compelling materials that support County programs, services, and events.

The ideal candidate will bring experience working in a large organization or government setting and will be highly proficient with design software and digital tools. A deep understanding of accessibility standards, design best practices, and project management is essential. You should be detail‑oriented, creative, and comfortable working independently while collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders. Strong interpersonal communication, flexibility, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines are key to success in this role.

Responsibilities

Design and produce high-quality digital and print materials that reflect County programs, priorities, and initiatives.

Ensure designs meet government accessibility standards and visually engage for broad and diverse audiences.

Collaborate with County departments and staff to understand communication goals and deliver creative solutions.

Create branding, signage, and promotional materials for events and press conferences.

Update and manage web graphics and digital assets in collaboration with the team.

Contribute to an inclusive and collaborative team environment that values innovation, responsiveness, and service excellence.

Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.

This position requires the ability to attend meetings or perform work in person at locations outside the office. Flexibility with work scheduling is essential, as occasional evening or weekend work may be required to support events and urgent communications needs.

Telework Policy Montgomery County Government offers a telework program in accordance with its official policy.

The first six months of employment are fully in‑office.

Telework eligibility is not guaranteed and is subject to departmental needs.

The majority of work will be on‑site to ensure collaboration with the team.

Experience Five (5) years of experience in commercial art, graphic design, television production or a related field, with strength in the design of total visual information products or a related field.

Education Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Graphic Arts, Commercial Art, Commercial Design, Television Production, or a related field.

Equivalency An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Preferred Criteria

Professional experience in graphic design

Professional experience using Adobe Creative Suite

Professional experience working with open‑source CMS platforms

Professional experience using quick motion graphic editing for social media

Preferred Interview Preference Criteria

3+ years of experience in quick motion graphic editing for social media.

Professional experience creating ADA‑compliant digital or print materials, social media, and web graphics for a government agency.

Experience working with open‑source web content management systems.

Skilled in web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and other coding languages.

High proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop).

Understanding of, and experience with, utilizing email marketing platforms, social media platforms, and other digital marketing tools to implement a variety of digital marketing efforts.

Ability to maintain a customer‑focused approach in interactions.

Demonstrated ability to receive feedback.

Proven ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.

Ability to follow and maintain Montgomery County Government’s established branding guidelines.

Demonstrated interest in current design, visual marketing, and e‑commerce trends.

Demonstrated ability to work autonomously on assigned projects and act as your own project manager.
