
Summary
The Purchasing Agent is a member of Prosthetic & Sensory Aids Service (PSAS) within the Prosthetic Service Line at the VISN or medical center. The role performs direct medical supply purchasing and inventory management support to the administrative and clinical services of the VA, initiating the obligation for all related requirements necessary to provide prosthetic, sensory aids, durable medical equipment, and supplies directly to Veterans.
Qualifications To qualify, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of the announcement, 02/23/2026. Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade in the past 52 weeks must also meet time‑in‑grade requirements. For a GS‑06 position, applicants must have served 52 weeks at GS‑05. An SF‑50 showing time‑in‑grade eligibility must be submitted; if the most recent SF‑50 does not clearly demonstrate one year of time‑in‑grade, a second SF‑50 must be provided.
Applicants may qualify based on experience, education, or a combination thereof:
Specialized experience: at least one year of experience equivalent to GS‑4 (GS‑05) in a related field, including knowledge of medical terminology, contracts, purchasing policies, and communication with medical staff and vendors.
Education: successfully completed four years of post‑high‑school education in any field.
Combination of education and experience: equivalent combination of post‑high‑school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, meeting total experience requirements for the grade level.
Applicants must reference the nature of duties, responsibilities, and hours worked for each position when claiming credit for experience.
Physical Requirements Must be in overall good health, able to sit at a desk working at a computer, and perform light to moderate physical activity including walking, bending, and carrying supplies. The position is primarily light and sedentary, with occasional moderate physical demands.
Duties
Purchasing Support:
Conducts purchasing under the micro‑purchase threshold, reviews and edits purchase requests, resolves issues, identifies needs, utilizes federal and agency acquisition regulations, tracks obligations and expenditures, and monitors budget forecasts.
Procurement Support:
Procures supplies and services to meet purchase, rental, or lease needs; develops selection criteria; prepares and issues contract modifications; communicates with inventory specialists, service line contacts, and contracting officers.
Administrative Support:
Serves as first line of contact for medical staff and customers regarding procured items.
Reporting:
Develops reports and spreadsheets, obtains, organizes, files, and retrieves reports for briefing and presentation purposes.
Performs receptionist, time‑keeping, record‑keeping, and miscellaneous duties in the medical facility.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Promotion Potential: May be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met.
Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
Work Schedule: Monday‑Friday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm PST, subject to change based on needs of service between 6:30 am – 5:00 pm.
