Departmental Overview The Berkeley Pre‑College Scholars Residential Program offers international and domestic high school students the opportunity to live on campus and enjoy the summer at Berkeley, allowing them to enroll in courses, participate in extracurricular activities, excursions, workshops, and take advantage of everything the campus has to offer. There are two Resident Director positions available.
Responsibilities Community Development
Model leadership and engagement through active participation in Pre‑College Scholars programs and encourage staff and residents to participate in the activities.
Maintain awareness of the issues of all residents, paying particular attention to concerns of underrepresented student populations.
Serve as a campus and community resource for students and staff by providing guidance in planning programs and activities.
Support and supervise RAMs & ARDs in their community development efforts through identifying resources and providing feedback.
Work collaboratively with ARDs to design and promote community building activities among residents in both halls.
Display appreciation of differences and assist students in developing an understanding of diverse cultures and lifestyles.
Act as a mediator in conflict situations when needed using program policy and restorative justice practices.
Facilitate an effective & supportive working relationship with the residential team & building staff.
Maintain a presence in the residence halls and consistent hours to best serve students & staff.
Regularly attend staff & pod events. Support leading all hall meetings.
Be present, welcoming and supportive during student arrival and departure.
Coordinate & participate in Pre‑College wide events as assigned.
Facilitate staff activities designed to provide training and team building for staff in the unit.
In collaboration with the Residential Operations Administrator, establish and monitor structure for RAM/ARD weekly programming, expense tracking, inventory management, and compliance with departmental standards & financial policies.
Support residential maintenance and student/staff accountability via community building activities that keep halls sustainable and hygienic.
Help to resolve resident problems and basic conflicts, referring serious or potentially serious matters to a Student Life and Development professional.
Residential Education Model Implementation & Engagement
Using student development theories, promote individual, community responsibility and development in accordance with the departmental residential curriculum.
Assists students who have academic and personal concerns; make appropriate referrals when necessary.
Develop and implement strategies to address the developmental needs of specific student populations.
Develop and maintain positive relationships with residents and staff that encourage communication and mutual respect.
Encourage a living/learning environment through academic integration activities, programs involving campus partners.
Assist with emergency response protocol and follow‑up for any students reported missing or tardy to class throughout the summer.
Address incidents of inappropriate behavior using a restorative and developmental approach.
Effectively resolve cases of student misconduct within a restorative and developmental framework.
Participate in disaster response preparedness, and assist residents if emergencies occur.
Safety/Risk Management Responsibilities
Work closely with the Pre‑College Scholars staff, facilities partners, UCPD, Berkeley Fire Department, and the University Fire Marshall to develop, implement response to fire, earthquake, and other safety issues.
Serve as a member of the staff on‑call duty rotation support at your assigned residential hall. Accompany program participants to the urgent care or hospital in case of an incident.
Assist in directing summer staff to ensure timely reporting of information to the appropriate Pre‑College staff.
Participate in daily and weekend duty coverage. Staff share holiday duty responsibilities.
Attend and participate in (bi)weekly Residential Leadership Team Health & Safety Meeting on Wednesdays from 10 am–11 am, collecting questions and concerns from Tuesday hall staff meetings.
Manage psychological, emotional, medical or other safety related emergencies in the residential community.
Create Incident Reports in a timely manner, and consult with professional staff on conduct action.
Model good COVID‑19 health and safety behavior, and abides by and enforces current campus requirements.
Respond to student behavior that violates campus and program policies.
Use reports and individual meetings to identify students who may be at risk.
Model ethical behavior and adhere to all program policies.
Communicate related policies to both staff & residents.
Administrative Responsibilities
Coordinate & administer the Residential Life Program for a residence hall under the supervision of a Residential Operations Admin, including both student development & health & safety components.
Maintain ongoing communication with the University and Pre‑College Scholars Program staff as necessary to ensure an appropriate exchange of information.
Complete assigned projects, reports, & inventories as directed by the department in the time allotted.
Attend and participate in staff development activities and training as outlined by the department.
Attend and participate in all aspects of mandatory staff training, starting Sunday, June 7th 2026. Lead select training(s) as requested by Professional staff.
Review and report any changes in housing rosters and communicate any inconsistencies to operations staff.
Act as first responder in terms of relaying student concerns regarding residential living to the Pre‑College Scholars program staff.
Attend regularly scheduled departmental meetings & professional development activities, including but not limited to weekly Residential Leadership Team Meeting on Mondays from 10 am–11 am.
Organize pre‑arrival room walk‑throughs to ensure student rooms are ready for move‑in.
Ensure RAM event planning, programming, and purchasing aligns with program policy and goals, and ensures all items are returned to the program after use.
Complete sections of the end‑of‑program reports by designated deadlines.
Manage community & roommate agreements for specific buildings.
Work with professional staff to complete an end of program report.
Support Pre‑College Scholars Residential opening and closing.
Support Late Curfew/Overnight Request form process, collecting emergency release forms, and other administrative duties.
Monitor program Slack channels and help provide front‑line support to Slack communications. Work with Professional Staff to draft and send community‑wide messages regarding emerging issues.
Maintain facilities through regular building walk‑throughs and liaise with conference services and facilities management.
Represent the university in a professional manner.
Student Staff Support and Training
Conduct regular weekly check‑ins with the staff to ensure all students are thriving in the program and to identify any needs for additional support in community building and programming efforts.
Train, coach, and support RAMs & ARDs on an ongoing basis to facilitate leadership and personal growth and development.
Supervise student engagement efforts within the residential curriculum by the RAMs & ARDs to ensure the attainment of department goals, leadership and personal development.
Develop and maintain staff awareness of campus/community issues through training, programming, individual contacts, role modeling and individual contacts with students and staff.
Plan and implement staff development and community development to aid the RAMs & ARDs in developing positive team dynamics and a cohesive team unit.
Support and supervise RAMs and ARDs in their administrative assignments ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and completeness.
Support ARDs with purchasing logistics, ensuring financial compliance, and escalating any card‑related issues.
Provide a high level of visibility & availability to staff, while serving as a role model for students & staff.
Provide opportunities for staff to receive feedback about the quality and effectiveness of their work.
Assist with and lead at least one session during RAM professional development sessions.
Coach RAMs & ARDs on maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and interactions with all residents, staff, and program participants to create a safe, respectful, and inclusive living environment.
Serve as a guide to the student leaders and provide accurate resource information.
Maintain staff compliance with established Residence Life and University Policies.
Conduct regular weekly hall staff meetings on Tuesdays from 7‑9 PM with themed weekly topics related to student support, training, and health and safety updates (and other meetings as needed).
Assist with Resident Advisor training & professional development.
Evaluate the performance of RAMs & ARDs on a regular basis. Provide coaching and guidance to address staff performance and escalates concerns to supervisor and Pre‑College professional staff for corrective action.
Required Qualifications

International experience/exposure; including but not limited to study abroad, Global Edge, etc.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, ethnic studies, social work, or related field and/or equivalent experience/training.
Salary & Benefits This is a full‑time, 10‑week (June 7th – August 14th), limited (temporary) position.
