The Director of Athletics provides administrative direction and oversight for all interscholastic athletics staff, programs, facilities, and activities. The Director is responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal, divisional, and institutional athletics regulations, administering departmental funds and accounts in a fiscally responsible manner, and sustaining a culture of sportsmanship, professionalism, and respect at all levels. The Director also collaborates with student administrative offices and Admissions on the recruitment and retention of student athletes and with the development and the media on publicity and reporting of athletic events and results. Frequent nights and weekend work, as well as in-season travel, are required. As the Academy is making significant investments to elevate athletics, including enhanced facilities, expanded recruiting efforts, increased scholarship support, and strengthened coaching resources, the Director will be expected to lead the development of elite, highly competitive programs capable of competing at the highest levels of interscholastic play.
Develops & maintains a comprehensive athletic program which seeks the highest development of all participants, and which respects the individual dignity of every athlete.
Actively utilize and promote Hargrave’s 4 pillars of: Academics, Athletics, Character, and Faith.
Long-term athletic department strategic planning
Program growth and competitive positioning
Alignment of athletics with institutional enrollment strategy
Serves as an integral member of the senior leadership team
Is a member of the AOD (Administrator on Duty) roster.
Supervises all coaches & personnel assigned to the athletic department.
Responsible for the hiring and onboarding of all coaches.
Serves as HMA’s official representative to the BRAC.
Organizes and conducts regular meetings of the Captain’s Council and the Cadet-Athlete Advisory Committee (CAAC).
Prepares & executes the budget for athletics and team accounts.
Schedules interscholastic contests for grades 6-12.
Schedules all officials for all home contests.
Supervises the maintenance of athletic equipment, fields, and facilities.
Assist in fundraising & recruiting sponsors for athletic-related projects
Plans and executes the rotational roster of all uniforms.
Oversees the set-up and breakdown of all home athletic contests and events.
Oversees the Summer Academy sports programs.
Plans and implements community summer sports programming.
Oversees the Head Coaches who are responsible for organizing the meal schedules and transportation of teams.
Acts as the official host, or designates an official host, for all visiting teams.
Must ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations relating to athletics are applied and followed, including Title IX and other federal laws and regulations, state laws and regulations.
Maintains records and documents as required and necessary to ensure proper documentation of athletic program activities, events, participation, and related information for the purpose of complying with school policies as well as applicable laws and regulations. This includes MaxPreps, SwimCloud, Trackwrestling, and Game Changer.
Plans and supervises all athletic recognition ceremonies.
Coordinates the cadet-athlete award program.
Assist the Head Coaches with their self-evaluations for improving HMA’s athletic programs.
Conducts annual evaluations of head coaches at the varsity and junior varsity level.
Responsible for all departmental communications, including internal and external stakeholders.
Cooperates with teaching staff, parents, public and media to ensure good public relations.
Promotes respect by example through appearance, manners, behavior, language & conduct during practices and contests.
Represent and support Hargrave on and off campus in a manner fitting with the mission of the school.
Promote positive sportsmanship from athletes both at practices and at contests, either at home or away.
Attend required training and in-service meetings.
Communicates effectively with the Athletic Trainer and ensures all athletes are receiving medical care in a timely fashion.
Maintains all required qualifications and certifications.
Enforces all regulations of HMA as they pertain to practice, games, events (home or away) and other functions.
Maintains and updates the Coaches Manual and Athlete Handbook periodically.
Follows rules and regulations set forth in both the Hargrave Coach’s Handbook and Employee Handbook.
Has at least 7 years of experience as an Athletic Administrator.
Has extensive experience in attracting and retaining qualified coaches, and those from diverse and culturally different backgrounds.
Has extensive experience in fundraising, community outreach, and maintaining strong relationships with all supporters.
Has experience in new athletic facility construction.
Has experience in the career growth of all coaches.
Is a continuous self-learner.
Open to new ideas, techniques, and instructions.
Model and enforce a high safety standard.
Hold a certification in American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED (or the ability to obtain one within 3 months of employment).
Valid VA driver’s license (or the ability to obtain one within 3 months of employment). CDL Preferred.
Proficient in all NCAA eligibility requirements.
Proficient in using MaxPreps, and HUDL systems.
The person employed for this position must be able to verify identity, and employment authorization, complete a background check, a drug test, and a finger print check
Physical Demands
May include, but not limited to, being able to perform the following functions: twisting; kneeling, sitting, standing, crouching, bending; reaching above head height; standing on raised platforms/ladders; and the potential of assisting in the carrying of others
Must be able to safely lift more than 50 pounds
Must be able to read and write effectively with American English as the primary language
Must be able to verbally command and to hear commands effectively to respond to Hargrave employees and Cadets
Must be comfortable working in varying degrees of seasonal weather
