Watts Street Baptist Church of Durham, NC seeks a Director of Music Ministries for a position averaging 30 hours per week (with a potential for full-time if the candidate serves as Organist). We seek a creative and inclusive director who understands sacred music as an important part of worship and spiritual growth and who will engage all levels of the congregation in a variety of musical experiences. Hiring range is $40,000 to $50,000 plus health benefits (compensation will increase if full-time). Responsibilities
Direct, train, and nurture the Chancel Choir, ensuring an environment that welcomes all who wish to sing.
Direct music education and programs for youth and children's choirs and direct or support volunteer‑led handbell choir.
Collaborate with the Senior Pastor and staff to design vital, creative worship that provides opportunities for adult, youth, children’s, and handbell choirs to participate and lead.
Supervise the organist and schedule guest musicians and instrumentalists.
Manage the music budget, maintain our extensive music library (including copyright and streaming compliance), and oversee the care of instruments and other equipment.
Foster community connection and outreach through the music program.
Qualifications
Spiritually Grounded: Follower of Christ with a deep theological understanding of sacred music and the liturgical calendar. Experience leading worship and being active in church ministry.
Musically Skilled: Degree in Music (Choral Conducting or Music Education preferred) or equivalent experience. Proficient in piano and comfortable leading a variety of sacred and inspirational music, both traditional and contemporary.
Organized & Collaborative: Skilled at planning and committed to working with ministerial staff and lay leaders to achieve a shared vision.
