The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a lifeguard and perform other related swimming facility duties. Responsibilities include monitoring activities within assigned swimming areas, rescuing and resuscitating individuals in danger of drowning, rendering first aid to injuries, assisting in cleaning and maintaining the swimming facility, performing gate control duties, assisting water safety instructors in conducting swimming lessons, and participating in required in-service training to maintain currency, capability, and certification to perform lifesaving and water rescue, to administer basic first aid and CPR.\nQualifications include meeting the general experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, to include the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for the GS-0189, Recreation Aid and Assistant Series. Basic requirement or individual occupational requirement includes willingness/ability to learn and complete the duties of a recreation aid including providing fitness and recreational opportunities to enhance force readiness and promote a healthy lifestyle for all assigned military, civilian personnel, and their family members while maintaining established standards.\nKnowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) include basic knowledge of lifesaving, first aid, and CPR, limited knowledge of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment, and materials to perform standing, recurring tasks, ability to communicate effectively orally, and demonstrated current physical ability to swim to and rescue swimmers of all age groups up to and including adult and to administer CPR to adults, children, and infants.\nTemporary positions will be filled not to exceed 1 year from the hire date with the option to extend in increments of up to 1 year for a maximum total of 3 years. A temporary appointment does not confer eligibility for noncompetitive movement to other positions or for reappointment after separation from employment.\nPhysical effort required in effecting a swimming rescue. Must be able to lift and carry 45 pounds and over with assistance. Much of the time is spent sitting, standing, or walking; however, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, or reaching is required. Note: This position requires a pre-employment physical.\nWork is performed indoors and outdoors. Involves long periods of exposure to summer sun and chlorinated water. Must possess a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.

Depending on the needs of the agency, and area of assignment, the age requirements might differ where employees that are 15 years of age or older can perform the job provided that applicable federal, state, and local requirements are followed.

All required certifications, whether possessed at time of application or obtained after appointment, must be kept current to continue employment in this class.

Must be able to successfully pass a performance test which includes simulated pool rescues. This test must be successfully passed every six (6) months after employment.

VISION REQUIREMENTS- Must be free from color blindness and have no permanent abnormality of either eye; must have at least 20 I 40 or better vision in each eye with or without corrective lenses (glasses or contacts) THE VISION REQUIREMENTS CANNOT BE WAIVED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. An employee who has undergone radial keratotomy may not be examined until six (6) weeks have elapsed from their last surgical procedure and must at that time meet the above stated vision requirements.

Work on weekends as scheduled during special events for the City and Aquatic Complex.

If assigned to the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center, Free Diving and/or SCUBA certification is preferred relative to assigned lifeguard and maintenance duties in deep water up to and including a depth of 6-meters (19.68 Feet).

PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS\nIn addition to life saving duties, the position involves medium physical demands, such as exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
