The Communications Officer serves as the critical first point of contact between the public and the Harbor Police Department, playing a vital role in ensuring timely, accurate, and effective emergency response. This position directly impacts public safety by receiving, prioritizing, and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls with precision and professionalism.
The ideal candidate is a calm, detail-oriented professional with strong verbal communication and active listening skills who can effectively gather and relay critical information in high-pressure situations. Minimum Qualifications
Six months of experience in transmitting and receiving messages by radio or in administrative services; OR
Six months of training in a business or clerical-related curriculum in a business school or technical institute; OR
Fifteen semester hours of college training.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All persons appointed to this job will be required by the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Louisiana State Police Terminal Operator Certification Program Guidelines to meet the terminal operator certification/re-certification requirement within six months of employment.
An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
Answer emergency and non-emergency telephone calls and requests for law enforcement services; determine the nature of the call and deploy the appropriate personnel and equipment; operate computer-sided dispatch system and various mission critical communications equipment
Adhere to department code of ethics; maintain proficiency in established policies, procedures, telecommunication equipment and geography of area served.
Answer and transmit messages over two-way radio. Receive and respond to information requests by officers.
Assists Criminal Investigations Division with background investigations on applicants for police officer positions, quarterly report and other statistics as required.
Receive , analyze, prioritize, and respond to general public complaints and inquiries. Alert the nearest officer, dispatch to locations, and relay information.
Search, enter, modify, and delete computerized records for vehicle registration , driver licenses, other licenses, wanted felons, missing persons, unidentified persons or bodies, stolen property, etc. in the appropriate computer database.
Performs a variety of clerical, record-keeping and general support duties related to communications activities. Also responsible for maintaining and ensuring required validations, user agreements, and record keeping.
