Job Description About the Role The Kitchen Steward plays a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the kitchen environment to ensure smooth and efficient food service operations. This position is responsible for cleaning dishes, utensils, kitchen equipment, and work areas to uphold high standards of hygiene and safety. The Kitchen Steward supports the culinary team by managing waste disposal and assisting with basic food preparation tasks when necessary. By maintaining a clean and orderly kitchen, the steward helps prevent contamination and contributes to a safe workplace for all staff. Ultimately, this role ensures that the kitchen operates seamlessly, allowing chefs and cooks to focus on delivering quality meals to guests. Must have Food Handlers (FH) certificate upon date of hire.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic literacy and numeracy skills to follow instructions and handle inventory.

Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding tasks.

Understanding of basic hygiene and sanitation standards in a kitchen environment.

Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Previous experience in a similar role or in a fast-paced food service environment is preferred but not mandatory.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification in food safety or sanitation practices.

Experience working in a commercial kitchen or hospitality setting.

Knowledge of proper waste management and recycling procedures.

Ability to operate commercial kitchen equipment safely.

Strong teamwork and communication skills to coordinate effectively with kitchen staff.

Responsibilities

Wash, clean, and sanitize all kitchen utensils, dishes, pots, pans, and equipment promptly and thoroughly.

Maintain cleanliness of kitchen floors, walls, and work surfaces to comply with health and safety regulations.

Assist in the proper storage of food supplies and kitchen materials to prevent spoilage and contamination.

Dispose of kitchen waste and recyclables in accordance with established procedures and environmental guidelines.

Support kitchen staff by organizing supplies and occasionally assisting with basic food preparation tasks as directed.

Participate in ongoing learning, education and on the job training.

Skills The Kitchen Steward utilizes attention to detail and time management skills daily to ensure all kitchen items are cleaned and ready for use without delay. Physical stamina and manual dexterity are essential for handling heavy dishware and operating cleaning equipment efficiently. Knowledge of hygiene and sanitation standards is applied consistently to maintain a safe and healthy kitchen environment. Communication skills enable the steward to coordinate with chefs and other kitchen staff to prioritize tasks and respond to urgent cleaning needs. Additionally, organizational skills help in managing supplies and waste disposal, contributing to the overall efficiency of kitchen operations.
