Position Overview

Dr. Will Wright of Augustana's History Department is seeking applicants for a paid editorial assistant for Spring Semester 2026. The assistant will be responsible for helping to edit and manage incoming stories to Plains History (www.plainshistory.org), a web- and mobile app-based digital public history project that provides scholarly historical information for historical sites and events to the public. Built on a map of the U.S. Northern Plains states (Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota), the web and mobile app (available in Google Play and Apple Stories) interface serves as a virtual tour guide, providing historical information that might otherwise be found on roadside markers, plaques, or memorials. Each pin dropped on the map links to a brief historical write-up of the site or event that took place there, including a possible selection of historic photos, current photos, audio/visual content, oral histories, and bibliographies of relevant sources.

The editorial is a paid part-time position of 6 hours per week for twelve weeks. Hours will be flexible, but they may concentrate toward the latter part of the semester due to the demands of incoming stories. The student will receive training in and become proficient at Omeka, a web-based database management tool, and Curatescape, which interfaces with the website and mobile phone apps.
