Role Description
The
Technical & Government Sales Specialist
will report to the Inside Sales Manager and be responsible for driving domestic government and defense business across Williams Valve’s product portfolio, with a primary focus on U.S. Navy, Department of Defense, shipbuilders/shipyards, and defense contractors. This role serves as the internal subject matter expert for U.S. government programs and domestic manufacturing initiatives, supporting sales growth through technically accurate quotations, strategic business development, and strong customer relationships.
This is a full-time role based in Long Island City, NY, with some travel required to support customer meetings, shipyards, and industry partners as needed. The Government Sales Specialist will manage and expand sales within the domestic government sector, including U.S. Navy and broader defense programs. Day-to-day responsibilities include preparing complex technical quotations, managing sales orders within the ERP system, identifying and pursuing new government opportunities, and maintaining close collaboration with Engineering, Operations, Quality, and Supply Chain teams to ensure feasibility, compliance, and on-time delivery.
The role requires a highly autonomous, detail-oriented professional with strong technical aptitude, the ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications, and a proactive mindset for identifying future programs and growth opportunities within the domestic manufacturing and government marketplace.

Core Responsibilities
Drive domestic government and defense business by preparing accurate, competitive, and technically sound quotations for U.S. Navy, DOD, and related customers. Enter, manage, and oversee work orders, quotations, and sales orders within the ERP system, ensuring full comprehension of customer requirements, technical specifications, and internal production capabilities. This includes translating customer needs into executable internal instructions for engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams. Serve as the internal subject matter expert for U.S. government and domestic manufacturing programs, including Buy American and U.S.-based production requirements. Proactively expand Williams Valve’s domestic government business by leveraging industry relationships, professional networks, and targeted outreach to shipbuilders, defense contractors, and government buyers. Identify and pursue new business opportunities by analyzing market trends, customer programs, and upcoming government initiatives. Maintain strong customer and supplier relationships, acting as a trusted technical and commercial point of contact. Collaborate with Regional Managers to align on customer priorities, strategic accounts, and growth opportunities, while keeping the Inside Sales Manager informed. Coordinate with Engineering, Production, Quality, Purchasing, and Warehouse teams to ensure feasibility, pricing accuracy, and on-time delivery. Support domestic manufacturing initiatives by working closely with leadership (including Operations and Quality) to identify high-potential programs and strategic opportunities. Conduct limited travel to shipyards, customer sites, and industry partners as required to support business development and relationship management. Provide guidance on government documentation processes, including interpreting customer drawings, specifications, and technical submission requirements. From time to time, support broader business initiatives and strategic projects for senior management related to domestic production and government growth. Adhere to company processes for quotes, orders, returns, and system usage, ensuring compliance with internal controls. Continuously build internal knowledge and provide training support to improve team understanding of government and defense business requirements.
Qualifications
Minimum 5—7 years of relevant experience, preferably supporting or selling into U.S. Government, U.S. Navy, Department of Defense, shipyards, or defense contractors (Isolation valve industry experience strongly preferred but not required). Strong knowledge of the U.S. government and defense marketplace (DIBBS, SAM, etc.), including procurement processes, shipyard operations, and vessel programs. Experience working with NAVSEA, NAVAIR, and other Navy commands Proficient technical understanding of isolation valves, including valve types, materials, API/ASME specifications, Mil-Spec., and Shock & Vibration standards. Proven ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and customer technical requirements. Demonstrated experience preparing complex quotations, BOMs, and managing orders within ERP systems. Track record of expanding business through industry relationships, networking, and strategic outreach. Ability to “foreshadow” business opportunities by identifying upcoming programs, customer needs, and market trends within domestic manufacturing and government sectors. Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple complex opportunities simultaneously. Highly autonomous and self-directed, with the ability to operate independently while collaborating across
sales, engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams. Pragmatic problem solver with strong business judgment and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging effectively with customers, internal stakeholders, vendors, and partners.
