
Loyalty Accounting Consultant
Fully remote US based engagement.
We are seeking a highly technical Loyalty Accounting Consultant to provide subject matter expertise in accounting for customer loyalty programs under US GAAP. This fully remote role will partner with finance, revenue accounting, FP&A, loyalty program leadership, and external advisors to ensure accurate reporting of loyalty-related revenue, costs, and liabilities.
The consultant will lead the technical accounting analysis, financial modeling oversight, and compliance efforts related to loyalty program accounting, including application of ASC 606. This role requires strong experience in revenue recognition, breakage analysis, actuarial modeling collaboration, and audit support.
Responsibilities
Loyalty accounting oversight for loyalty programs, ensuring compliance with US GAAP and ASC 606.
Oversee the allocation of revenue to loyalty points (material right), deferred revenue recognition, and breakage accounting.
Maintain and update schedules and workpapers supporting loyalty program balances for period-end close.
Partner with external actuarial firms to review and validate redemption rate modeling, value per point, cost per point, and overall program liability.
Collaborate with FP&A and loyalty program teams to support forecasting and financial planning related to loyalty liabilities and redemption trends.
Perform technical accounting research, including analysis of new FASB pronouncements and their impact on loyalty and revenue accounting.
Prepare and maintain technical accounting policy memos supporting loyalty accounting positions.
Support preparation of financial statement disclosures and regulatory reporting related to loyalty balances.
Serve as primary liaison for external auditors on loyalty accounting matters.
Provide advisory support on internal controls, business process improvements, and special projects within revenue accounting.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required
Master’s degree in Accounting or MBA preferred
10+ years of overall accounting experience, including a mix of public accounting and loyalty accounting
6–8 years of public accounting experience, preferably with a Big 4 firm in audit or technical accounting advisory
Deep technical knowledge of FASB Accounting Standards Codification
Strong command of ASC 606, particularly as it relates to:
Allocation of material rights
Deferred revenue and point redemption accounting
Breakage estimation
Sales-based royalty scope exception
Symbolic IP considerations
Estimation of standalone selling price (SSP)
Constrained variable consideration
Experience working with actuarial models supporting loyalty programs
