
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION AND THE ROLE:
The Executive Director (ED) is the chief strategist and innovator responsible for the overall leadership and management of Meals on Wheels Yolo County (MOW Yolo) – an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1975 with a mission to nourish and engage seniors in Yolo County, California. MOW Yolo is the federal Older Americans Act senior nutrition and socialization provider for Yolo County, and performs its mission in compliance with related requirements. Currently, MOW Yolo serves ~1,200 older adults with ~5,000 meals a week and operates a 5,300 square foot institutional meal production facility to do so. The organization also operates as a social enterprise, receiving reimbursement to provide ~2,000 meals weekly to other nonprofit organizations regionally, supplementing robust private philanthropic support as a key revenue stream. The ED heads a Leadership Team comprised of the Programs Director, Operations and Logistics Director, and Administration and HR Director, motivating together an empowered and passionate staff and hundreds of dedicated volunteers to accomplish this work. The Executive Director reports to a deeply committed Board of Directors and is the person ultimately responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission; programmatic and financial objectives, as well as its adherence to its core vision.
CORE AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Strategic Plan Execution: In 2023, the organization set forth a bold and ambitious strategic plan, which is updated annually to reflect evolving opportunities and challenges. This plan serves as MOW Yolo’s “North Star” to sustain the mission and deepen impact.
Senior Services Programming and Operations: Leads, sets direction and oversees all mission-driven MOW Yolo programs and activities, in collaboration with Programs Department and Food Services and Operations Department leadership. This includes home-delivered meals addressing senior food insecurity and congregate dining offering engaging socialization opportunities. Additionally, works with staff to ensure that nutritional requirements and aspirations are prioritized, and that volunteers are recruited, onboarded, trained, stewarded, and recognized with an inspired approach that meets the organization’s needs.
Social Enterprise: Seeks opportunities to leverage MOW Yolo’s considerable meal production capacity and expertise to provide meals to other nonprofit organizations for reimbursement to fund MOW Yolo’s mission in Yolo County.
Philanthropic Engagement: Private donors provide the majority of MOW Yolo’s ~$3.5 million annual operating budget. These donors include individuals, corporations/businesses, foundations, and other grantors. Such, the ED must spearhead development efforts to both maintain a diverse donor base and identify and cultivate new prospects.
Organizational Leadership and Strategy: Fosters an organizational culture that works collaboratively, develops and considers options, selects and follows through on an agreed course of action and evaluates effectiveness of programs and activities.
Community Outreach and Partnerships: Serves as the foremost ambassador and spokesperson for MOW Yolo, engaging with the communities of Yolo County to raise awareness about senior food security and build collaborations and partnerships that support the work. Develops deep relationships with local and state political leaders, other non-profit organizations, service organizations, and donor groups.
